Over the years, and thanks to the CD revolution, film music has come into its own. ... more
Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975) has given us some of the most distinct film scores of any composer. As the lists of titles show, Herrmann did a number of Alfred Hitchcock movies--Psycho,Marnie,North by Northwest,Vertigo, andTorn Curtain. What is remarkable is how these works cohere as atmospheric tone poems.Fahrenheit 451: Suite for Strings, Harps, and Percussionhas the same kind of atmospherics as some of Arnold Bax's tone poems of the 1930s. This music does not need a visual medium. It's that good.--Paul Cook

Advantages: Stunning commentary on a dystopic future Disadvantages: Too dark and controversial for some audiences
note: also appears on my film review website, ShaunMunro.co.uk, and Dooyoo!
Battle Royale, the adaptation of Koshun Takami's fabulous novel of the same name, is near enough controversy at 24 frames per second, unleashing a downbeat, counter-culture, subversive tone from its matter-of-fact opening, to its twist-filled end. Much furore has surrounded the fact that this film is still unreleased in America (contrary to the belief that the film was banned), most postulating that a film involving school kids killing each other is simply too close to the bone in the wake of the Columbine, and more recently, Virginia Tech shootings (which means that things don't bode well for the already ill-fated American remake of this film).
Much comparison has been drawn to Kubrick's cerebral masterpiece A Clockwork Orange, in how both films accompany ...
Advantages: Great cover, some good music Disadvantages: Much of the music does not stand up to this listening
The Carry On Album is a CD of music from the wonderful Carry On films, which spanned three decades. It is played by the City of Prague PhilharmonicOrchestra & is really only for huge officianados of the films. Some of the music is instantly recognisable & evokes all kinds of great memories about the films, but other tracks do not stand up so well as pieces of music, away from the films they were written for. The music from the Carry On films - Camping, Sergeant, Teacher, Nurse, Cabby, Cleo, Jack, Behind, At Your Convenience, Up The Khyber, Doctor & Doctor Again - does not stand up well as an album, but the art work on the cover is great. ...
Advantages: Technically advanced, melodic, powerful, well produced Disadvantages: No CD Inlay (Small pickup)
This late 2006 release follows in the footsteps of Metallica (S&M).
The Digipak contains 3 discs. Disc 1 is just the band, Disc 2&3 includes the Octavarium Orchestra.
I would recommend this album based on the following-
- It is technically advanced
- Great melodies and harmonies
- A slightly different apporach to Progressive Metal - using complex rhythms and melodies, with an Orchestra.
The pack does not come with a CD inlay/cover which I found a bit disappointing - like to look through when listening. This is only a minor pickup however - the music is brilliant.
John Petrucci peforms well throughout the album - varying his guitar solos slightly (improvisation).
Innocence Faded (Disc 1 Track 6) brings back the old school Dream Theater sound that never gets boring.
The epic track Octavarium on Disc 3 - 27 minutes long ...
