Advantages: FREE, interesting art work and a Cathedral in daily use Disadvantages: It is a church so may not appeal to all
Henry VIII to Bishop Sherburne, so it portrays a very important part of the Cathedral?s history.
"North Transept"
Here you can see the 16th century paintings of the Bishops of Chichester painted by Lambert Barnard. Rather bizarrely they all have exactly the same face which I found fascinating, it must have saved the artist thinking too much about each face.
"Marc Chagall Window"
The window was designed by the Russian Jewish artist Marc Chagall when he was 91 and unveiled in 1978 it is based on the theme of Psalm 150 "...let everything that hath breath praise the Lord". The colour is predominantly red which represents for praise and joy and it is a very attractive more modern style of stained glass window.
"Two interesting older Romanesque Sculptures"
These sculptures are from the 12th century, one is the raising of Lazarus ...
Advantages: Beautiful Requiem Disadvantages: Better live
This review is of the requiem itself rather than the entire CD as it makes up most of the music on the disc.
Of all the classical requiems out there Faure's is perhaps the most emotive. Its movements are sombre without being morose and solemn without being boring. Listeners may be familiar with extracts used in recent television adverts particulaly the Agnes Dei whose middle passage and modulation are perhaps the most fantastic in the whole work. Another great is the Libere Me where a solo male voice is a nice contrast to the soprano solo in the Pie Jesu.
My only qualm with the piece is the In Sanctum Spiritum where the staccato organ part conjures up images of the magic roundabout?!
Defintely one to listen to very loudly after a long day. For a very tranquil experience give it a try...! ...
I felt compelled to write a review of Requiem For A Dream simply because it blew me away. I had vaguely heard of it for a while; I knew that it was about drugs, it was supposedly good, and that was about it. However, I recently stumbled across it on my trusted font of cinematic knowledge, IMDb, and discovered that not only is it by the director of Pi (another critically acclaimed film); not only is the director, Darren Aronofsky, married to Rachel Weisz; not only is he the guy who's made The Fountain (that film which got booed off at the Venice Film Festival); but that it was also voted as one of the top 58 films of all time. I also read that the last fifteen minutes of this film is the most harrowing thing you'll ever see. I was interested.
First things first; the story. Sara Goldfarb (played by Ellen Burstyn - The Exorcist ...
