Goodbye Johnny
Review of Man Comes Around, The (American IV) - Johnny Cash by  waynehorrigan

Advantages: Sombre, poignant, affecting
Disadvantages: Couple of right royal stinkers

..."And I heard as it were, the noise of thunder and one of the four beasts saying "come and see". And I saw. And behold: a white horse", so starts this first track of this fabulous album. It's a song about dying and reaching the gates of Heaven. References to golden ladders and thornbushes add to the apocolyptical theme. An acoustic guitar and bass are the only other instruments - aside from Cash's extraordinary voice - on the song and what a superb, uptempo, portentious way to start this "death album". 2. Hurt This track was released as a song at the end of 2003 just prior to his death. The video - if nothing else - remains ever so sad as it backtracks through Cash's life via concert footage and home video tapes and allied to lyrics such as "I hurt myself today" and "the old familiar sting/tried to kill it all away" and "what have I... Fata Morgana (Nico's last Concert) - Nico
Review of Fata Morgana 1988 (Nico's Last Concert) - Nico by  adams66

Advantages: the whole final gig, lots of new material, well recorded
Disadvantages: hard going for newcomers

...Nico (born Christa Paffgen) first came to prominence as a Warhol acolyte in the mid 1960s. Andy Warhol had the bizarre idea of placing the statuesque german model into the grimy New York avant garde rock band The Velvet Underground despite her limited singing experience and vocal range. But somehow it worked. For Nico, Lou Reed wrote three of the best songs he'd ever write - "All Tomorrow's Parties", "I'll Be Your Mirror" and what became Nico's signature song "Femme Fatale". Nico then branched out on her own and over the next twenty years recorded a sporadic series of sometimes brilliant albums but a serious heroin addiction seemed to have stopped her ever making the impact that should have. By the late 1980s Nico had finally kicked her habit and sat down to write a series of new songs. These were showcased at this concert... Read review

Star Trek IV
Review of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - Soundtrack by  berlioz

Advantages: A reasonably good overture
Disadvantages: The merits end there

...Beginning where the last film ended, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home continues the story as Kirk and crew are in exile on Vulcan when they defied Starfleet and stole the Enterprise in order to get Spock's body away from the planet Genesis and back to Vulcan. After fighting off Starfleet, Klingons and a destructing planet they managed to get Spock back to Vulcan where they performed a seremony to reunite Spock's katra (Spock's consciousness at the time in McCoy) with his body, finally bringing him back to life. Now Kirk and the rest have decided to return to Earth and face the consequences. Piloting their stolen Klingon Bird of Prey they soon find out that Earth is being bombarded by an alien probe, scanning and vaporising the oceans in search for humpback whales, as it is soon discovered. The whales have been extinct since the 21st century... Read review
