with the abandon, genius, and intimate knowledge of every detail he, as composer, imagined. The crisp orchestra and slower tempos maximize the colours of the orchestral landscape and create magic. This recording falls just one tenor's diction short of perfection. Te Kanawa's scrumptious soprano deliciously graces Maria's music, realizing the virtuosity often unattainable in theatre singers' renditions. Troyanos combines a ferocious chestiness with classically trained savvy. The only weakness is Carreras's diction, which he so obviously works hard to Americanise, but falls distractingly short. Bernardo - George Chakiris - Gang Leader of the Puerto Ricans, he was just as hot headed as Riff, overly protective of his sister and dating Anita. There was a nice scene on the roof of his apartment block where America was sung. He plays the part of an arrogant youth with attitude.
Other Sharks members were - Anita (already mentioned), Chino - Jose De Vega, Pepe - Jay Norman, Indio - Gus Trikonis (Gus's sister was also in the show, Gina Trikonis she played Grazella Riff's girlfriend), and Consuelo - Yvonne Othon

The Overture - takes us through the title WestSideStory ...
Advantages: The DVD looks and sounds terrific...every element falls into place beautifully... Disadvantages: those who hate Romeo & Juliet probably wont bother to give it a chance...
the original stage players had a special magic to them; well, I didn't see the original production for obvious reasons. The two actors that I thought really stole the film however were Rita Morena (as Barnardo's girlfriend Anita) and Chakiris, who both won Oscars; let me put it this way, Chakiris alone is to dancing, what Muhammed Ali is to boxing. Robbins is the real master behind WESTSIDESTORY however, and he deservedly got two Oscars...one special one for his choreography and one for co-directing with Wise. An impressive achievement.... considerering also that he was fired halfway during production.
Of course, the DVD looks great while making the film, which was released back in 1961, seem like it was made yesterday. The DVD includes a second disk with an hour long documentary "Memories of WestSideStory," which featured ...

Well here she is again musicals, musicals, musicals. .....I can't stop I love them all so much.
WestSideStory - what can I say that hasn't been said before. A modern day love story based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, but with a somewhat different ending. Maria does not commit suicide as Juliet does, but instead feels her life has ended because of everything that has happened to her. The true ending of Romeo and Juliet was deemed to be too depressing for filmgoing audiences, hence the change.
Again, originally a stage show later made into a movie, WestSideStory is directed by Robert Wise, who went on to further fame when he directed Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim are responsible for the amazing musical score, indeed Sondheim was a protege of the famous Oscar Hammerstein, who ...
