The world becomes a better place as Leonard Bernstein conducts his first West Side Story ... more
with the abandon, genius, and intimate knowledge of every detail he, as composer, imagined. The crisp orchestra and slower tempos maximize the colours of the orchestral landscape and create magic. This recording falls just one tenor's diction short of perfection. Te Kanawa's scrumptious soprano deliciously graces Maria's music, realizing the virtuosity often unattainable in theatre singers' renditions. Troyanos combines a ferocious chestiness with classically trained savvy. The only weakness is Carreras's diction, which he so obviously works hard to Americanise, but falls distractingly short. Still, the overall recording is brilliant. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

~~ WESTSIDESTORY ~~
I would like to say this is a modern day Romeo and Juliet and I suppose it is, if you think back to when Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, but in fact the film is now 44 years old and it was nominated for 11 Oscars which it won 10 of.
WestSideStory (Stage show), premiered at the Rivoli Theatre in New York in 1957, where it had a very successful run of 77 weeks. After its successful time on the stage, the movie went into production in August 1960, the full cast having to complete 2 months of gruelling rehearsals prior to production. So look out next year as it will be the Golden Anniversary of WestSideStory and I should imagine they will re-release a special edition to celebrate it.
Originally the movie version was only going to take 3 weeks to make, but instead it took months and Premiered in ...
Advantages: The DVD looks and sounds terrific...every element falls into place beautifully... Disadvantages: those who hate Romeo & Juliet probably wont bother to give it a chance...
When I was growing up, my parents had two great musicals on the same tape---WESTSIDESTORY and GREASE. My mother knew I would enjoy GREASE more than WESTSIDESTORY and when I tried to watch it, I wasn't really impressed with it, and all I remembered from it was it starting with an aerial shot of Manhattan. I wasn't until this year that I saw WESTSIDESTORY in all its glory, after I was recommended to buy the DVD by a very good friend. Some of my favorite musicals have been MY FAIR LADY, 1776, and the SOUTH PARK movie (weird collection, I know), but I was absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer power and energy of WESTSIDESTORY. And now I'm glad to be writing a review on it, as I tell you about the film---and the experiance I had while watching it.
First of all, I know everyone out there doesn't like musicals, but this is ...
Advantages: The music and dancing Disadvantages: Some ropey sets and poor acting by Richard Beymer
Well here she is again musicals, musicals, musicals. .....I can't stop I love them all so much.
WestSideStory - what can I say that hasn't been said before. A modern day love story based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, but with a somewhat different ending. Maria does not commit suicide as Juliet does, but instead feels her life has ended because of everything that has happened to her. The true ending of Romeo and Juliet was deemed to be too depressing for filmgoing audiences, hence the change.
Again, originally a stage show later made into a movie, WestSideStory is directed by Robert Wise, who went on to further fame when he directed Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim are responsible for the amazing musical score, indeed Sondheim was a protege of the famous Oscar Hammerstein, who ...
