The Best Air Guitar Album in the World... Ever!should not be mistaken for a "greatest rock ... more
album ever" kind of affair as it would cause monumental arguments as to why it includes Robbie Williams but not Led Zeppelin. The songs chosen by Queen guitarist Brian May are all there because they make the fingers start flexing, the head to start banging, and force you to assume the imaginary position of a pouting rock guitarist on stage in front of thousands of screaming worshipers. The first disc kicks of with Queen's heavy blues-rock anthem "Tie Your Mother Down" and ends with one of the most epic guitar solos ever recorded, Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" which sadly appears as an abridged version. Highlights along the way are the brooding intro to Bowie's "Rebel Rebel", the Surfaris "Wipeout" and seminal guitar moment from beardy rock god Eric Clapton on "Layla". Disc two has a few more inclusions from recent years with Robbie Williams' storming "Let Me Entertain You", Weezer's "Hash Pipe" and Wheatus's "Teenage Dirtbag" alongside such classics as Jimi Hendrix's"Voodoo Chile" and Motorhead's "Ace of Spades". So in summary there's no "Stairway" but plenty of guitar hooks, stabs and widdles to keep you prancing like Kiss while sounding like Beavis and Butthead. --Georgina Collins

Both CD's have 22 tracks on them. But as with any compilation CD you have the obligatory fill in tracks. Like the Potters Wheel interlude.

I'm not sure how this CD came into our house. I think it was via a Christmas Amazon voucher..and then it was intended to be a driving CD. Well its worked its way out of my overtly crammed Glove box to the living room..The CD Cover and inlay
On the front cover we have a sketchy drawing of a guy with long hair, looks like he's pointing at the floor, but he is in fact playing air guitar.Apparently. The man is a strange colour of yellow, and he is inbetween enormous letters stating: 'The best air guitar album in the world ever III' The inlay thingy contains all of the tracks including who wrote and produced them.It also has a foreword by Brian May himself. In the middle pages are some more pictures, similar to the one on the front.Demonstrating some air guitar moves that you may like to try in the privacy of your own home. The Tracks and that..
Both CD's have 22 tracks on them. But as with any compilation CD you have the obligatory fill in tracks. Like the Potters Wheel interlude. Cd one is better than the second. You really have an ecletic mix of songs which feature some sort of fancy guitar work or hum dinging riff. Also the one thing that suprises me is that the music spans from the 60's to the 00's.
It starts off with the obligatory Queen track, Now I'm here, which is one of their lesser known tracks and isnt one of my personal favorites. Already you can start to see that this compilation is perhaps scraping the barrel somewhat with tunes that you can frug around the room to. Why White Wedding by Billy Idol is on here I will never know, its all synthesisers and odd throaty singing. But hey I guess it brings back some memories for some.
Not for me though, Def Leppard does though. That lovely little fuzzy haired ditty Armageddon it features. A somewhat hard rock fluffy haired tune, which would'nt be out of place in a spit and sawdust pub. So the places I frequent then.
Perhaps my favorite song on the first CD is Higher Ground by the Chilli peppers. This is remnant of their earlier funk rock, as opposed to the Stadium Arcadium release of late. Its fairly guitar driven and you can throw yourself around the living room dismembering scatter cushions as you go to this song.
And to be honest there really are'nt that other many songs that you can do that to on this album. Even the studio version of Thin Lizzys Dont believe a word sounds a little jaded. Althougha fabulous song, youre better off listening to the live version. As the version on here is just a little weak and watered down like Student Union Beer. Unlike The house of the Rising Sun by the Animals. My God, it sounds like it was recorded on someones tape player in the toilet of a concert. But I am being unfair, I mean this song has chuffed its way right form the 60's and seems a little out of place on this album. As the whole song (about a brothel..nice!) is mostly clanked out on a dodgy oragn.
Gary Moore Still has the blues. But I can't fault this song. I would play my heartbroken Air Guitar to this song. It's a lovely chilled out blues tune, which is guitar driven, it reminds me of drinking Bourbon. As its just such a smooth and tidy song. In comlete comaprison we have that lovely fluffy haired posh bloke David Coverdale in Whitesnake..Fool for your Loving. This isnt the original recording of the song, its a slightly inferior 80's version with wailing guitars and cranked up synthesisers. But in an embarrassing way I quite like it. The guy can sing, and theres a riff there that keeps me happy until we conclude the CD with a spot of Slade.
Songs on CD 1 I like...
Higher Ground -Chillis Cream- Badge...Dodgy lyrics about a Swan..but nice rhythm. Thin Lizzy- Dont belive a word.. Gary Moore- Still got the blues Whitesnake-Fool for your loving Slade-Cum on feel the noise....I dare you not to love Noddy Holder who has not aged since the 70's.
Songs I dont mind..
Spin Doctors- Two Princes..remember that?? The Animals- House of the Rising Sun Blink 182- All the small things... Chad thingy from Nickelback and his mate-Hero
Get out the thumb screws..skip skip!
Billy Idol- White Wedding Status Poo- Caroline..shoot me now.. The Shadows-Man of Mystery..Hank I wish you were. Rush- Spririt of Radio..help my nuts are stuck in my zip..!
The less than perfect CD 2
We start off with Van Halen on this disc. And then move on to The Who. Now I'm not a Who fan, so I cant be favourable about teh track I cant explain. If it was Substitute then it would be different..I have never been sure if I would have been a mod or a rocker anyway. My Dad was a Mod, well he had a Scooter anyway.
Moving on to the crazy Gay Bar by Electric Six.Why this track is on here I dont know, you can't air guitar to this..I have tried. But the lyrics are cheeky and it strums its way through to the end of the track and it is quite quirky. I would'nt blast it out of my Peugeot though, unless I could hide in the footwell whilst driving.
Moving on we have Avril Latrine..I have no comment..except that my teeth are now grinding..oh my god REM! Help..the barrel now has a hole from excessive scraping. The track from those warbling baldies is the One I love. Which always sounds out of tune to me with wailing in the back ground.
When I put this CD in I tend to skip to track 12 which is The offspring Pretty Fly for a White Guy. It brings back memories of me being at college. But it has a thumping rhythm and crazy shouty singing. So this is more of a singer than a air guitar one. the next track again is such a stark comparison. You couldnt get any further away with Ballroom Blitz by the Sweet. Ahh Glam rock at its best, the words make no sense, its a bit cheesy, but its a great song.
The next song I tend to skip to is Sweet home Alabama by Lynryd Sknryd..the band you can only say when you're sober. Now this is an air guitar pub song deluxe. A deep bluesy riff with some very dramatic backing vocals. I can guarantee that this will have you singing and thinking that you are actually from Alabama. Its quite a long track so you may need to limber up beforehand. This is where I eject the second CD as the rest of it is pretty dire.
Songs on CD 2 that I like..
Electric Six- Gay Bar..hee hee Offspring- Pretty Fly for a Whiteguy Sweet- Ballroom Blitz Lyrykd...oh God I cant spell it- Sweet Home Alabama
Songs that make me want to listen to Steps..
Avril Latrine-Unwanted..yes love you are.. REM- The One I love..not me I hope Yngwie Malmsteen-Vengeance..arrogance more like ZZtop-TushWould I recommend this CD then?
In a word .....no. In my opinion there are far too many songs on this album that just don't need to be here. I don't know what the criteria was to make it onto this album. But I think if a guitar made an appearance then youre in!
When I do pop this CD into the tray I have to sit with my remote control skipping a lot of the tracks out because they are so drivelsome. Now that to me is not a good sign when you buy a CD and listen to it a couple of times.
I paid roughly £11 from Amazon for mine, but my advice would be to buy it on Ebay for pennies, as it really isnt worth much else.Well I am about to deflate my Air guitar now..possibly for good...
