This is an amazing album. My only complaint is that my version doesnt include their version of Ravel's Bolero. This was masically , the best band that Zappa ever put together, recorded in 1988 and released in 1991. The blurb say that ... Read review

band on a collection of crowd-pleasing favourites, concert staples and cover songs. Zappa's crystalline Stratocaster sound (a far cry from the "squank" of the 1970s) highlights some of the most lyrical and inspired solo guitar work of his life. Highlights include an adrenaline charged version of "Zomby Woof" a thoroughly rocking turn at Ravel's Bolero, and a horn arrangement of Jimmy Page's "Stairway to Heaven" guitar solo. --Andrew Boscardin

This is an amazing album. My only complaint is that my version doesnt include their version of Ravel's Bolero. This was masically , the best band that Zappa ever put together, recorded in 1988 and released in 1991. The blurb say that it's "big band arrangements of concert favourites and obscure album cuts along with deranged cover versions and a few premiere recording", which sums up the album.
The album opens with "Heavy Duty Judy" basically a jam over three chords with lots of twiddly bits, which segues into a reggae , big band version of "Ring of Fire" complete with spot on Johnny Cash impersonation. The first CD continues in a similar vein , touching down on "I left My Heart in San Franciso" culminating in "Inca Roads" and the sublime "Sofa No 1".
The second CD opens with Purple Haze and Sunshine of Your Love , again big band style, maintaining the style iof the first CD with short versions of "When Irish Eyes are Smiling", "Godfather Part II Theme" and "The Theme from Bonanza" interspersing Zappa's originals like "The Torture Never Stops" , "Penguin in Bondage" and "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue" culminating in a fantastic version of "Stairway to Heaven" in which the guitar solo of the original is matched note for note by the brass section of Zappa'd twelve piece band.
NOte all the cover version on this album are very tongue in cheek , but still leave amazed at the musicianship on show. It also proves you can be a very serious musician and have a sense of humour.
Whilst this album is not for everyone, if you have a little sense of adventure , track it down and give it a listen. It's available on Ryko Disk.

Album Notes
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, synthesizers); Ike Willis, Mike Keneally (guitar, synthesizers); Kurt McGettrick (contrabass clarinet, baritone & bass saxophones); Paul Carman (soprano, alto & baritone saxophones); Albert Wing (tenor saxophone); Walt Fowler (trumpet, flugelhorn, synthesizers); Bruce Fowler (trombone); Scott Thunes (Mini-Moog synthesizer, electric bass); Bobby Martin (keyboards); Chad Wackerman (drums, percussion). Digitally remastered by Bob Stone (1993). Recorded live in 1988. One of three collections from the 1988 world tour, THE BEST BAND YOU NEVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE is a portrait of one of Zappa's most accomplished bands. Unfortunately, this band self-destructed in mid-tour and never completed their scheduled appearances. Hence, the title stands for the fans that couldn't see this amazing group live. The vocals of Ike Willis and Mike Keneally, the rhythmic acrobatics of Chad Wakerman, Ed Mann and Scott Thunes, the powerful horn section including the Fowler brothers, keyboardist/vocalist Bobby Martin--it all adds up to one of the most musically agile bands Zappa ever commanded. There are the usual Zappa favorites on disc one with "Cosmic Debris" and "Zomby Woof." The band also gets to flex its muscles on the instrumentals "Zoot Allures" and "Sofa 1#." Disc two captures all the zany behavior that could be preserved on tape as bizarre covers of "Purple Haze" and "Sunshine Of Your Love" start things off. Snippets of "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," "The Godfather Theme" and "Bonanza" escalate into a diatribe by right-wing character Brother A. West and several songs denouncing televangelist Jimmy Swaggart. The finale of "Stairway To Heaven" ties everything back together in grand Zappa style.
