form of her kickoff single, "Girlfriend," which is filled with singing, clapping, and cheerleader-style chanting. The song is quite a sonic contrast to her previous disc, Under My Skin, which was considered to be Lavigne's more mature follow-up to her 16 million-selling debut CD, Let Go. Like that debut, The Best Damn Thing will be largely and deeply embraced by teenage girls, and is packed with songs that will create enthusiastic sing-alongs in concert. There are a handful of numbers that will appeal to a wider audience; "Innocence" and disc closer "Keep Holding On" would both fit perfectly in a Gray's Anatomy episode, while the sultry message and solid harmonies in "Hot" will appease ears of many ages. Lavigne's husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryk Whibley makes an appearance as producer and instrumentalist on a handful of tracks; their union, however, seems to have bred more than love. "I Don't Have to Try" and "Everything Back But You" both have a frenetic pace and chorus that is so eerily Sum-like that if they weren't married, a copyright lawsuit might ensue. That aside, the record oscillates between lyrically acerbic fare ("One of Those Girls," "I Can Do Better") and fluffy sugar-pop melodies ("Contagious," "The Best Damn Thing") delivering far more spunk rock than punk rock. --Denise Sheppard

Advantages: 'When You're Gone' is borderline entertaining. Disadvantages: The album is largely disappointing, full of tracks that don't impress.

'The Best Damn Thing' is as hideous a release as ever from the Canadian born pop sensation. It begins with the horrible single release 'Boyfriend', ... ...help but hate her 'The Best Damn Thing' album. I think the one thing that annoys me the most about the music of Avril Lavigne is that every track she has ever released always seems to contain the same grating guitar riff. It infuriates me to hear her rocking out the same riff each and every time she comes out with a new track, and from listening to this album it is clear that the same musical composition seems to crop up an unacceptable amount of ...

Advantages: Avril at her catchiest Disadvantages: Not a lot of depth or maturity to the songs
...her first.
The Best Damn Thing is Avrils 3rd album and I was really looking forward to hearing it. But on the first listen I was extremely disappointed. As I have said I loved her first album and was quite keen on her second. I heard the first single Girlfriend which I thought was a good catchy tune, although a bit more poppy than her usual stuff. Presumed she had picked the most commercial track to promote the album. I also liked the video for ... ...in my opinion is the best track. After several listens the songs are growing on me and it is a good easy listening pop album. If you like that kind of thing then this is for you. I was personally hoping Avril would head in a more rock oriented direction.
Avril has now released the 3rd single from the album, which is track no 7 - 'Hot'. When I listened to this track on the album, my first thought was that the lyrics were pretty simple. It seemed ...

...there, particularly 'Runaway' and 'The Best Damn Thing'.
Overall I think the album is quite enjoyable and shows some progression from 'Let Go' (which is the last of Avril's albums that I actually felt compelled to buy). I feel that this album is much more upbeat than previous offerings and that can only be a good thing.
However I do feel that for all its good points it is still not a particularly strong album - it is good but could be so much better. ...

...album is by far the best one that Avril Lavigne has recorded. It was bought for me as a presant and I just love it. It is a lot different from her others, it's more grown up! She really has outdone herself with this one, she's not the typical skateboarding adoloscent no longer, she is now a grown woman and this album certainly portrays that transition into adult hood. She is a very talented young woman and this can be heard in her songs, which she ...
