Aztec Camera are the one band that I can not listen to when my husband is home! He absolutely hates them but what he hates more than the actual band is the teen frenzy that they send me into-jumping on the sofa and singing with my hairbrush at the top of my voice!
I must admit that Aztec Camera are not the kind of band that I am normally into. Cheesy, cliche 80s New Wave punk rock that I normally steer clear of, but something about these songs that really blows my hair back...what can I say in my own defence!
The great thing about this album is that although you may think you have never heard of them or their songs, you will recognise loads of their songs from the extensive radio play they had in your childhood. Thus the people that will love this band the most are people who were just descovering music in the early 80s.
This album was originally released in Japan (1999) and it wasnt until 2001 that we in the UK caught up with it. This album works like a resume of Roddy Frame's penchant for writing a really catchy uplifting tune. It's a selection of 16 of the bands best tracks that really show off the outstanding likeability of this band, both musically and lyrically.
For those who haven't heard of this band before, they sound kind of like Jazz-pop with clear New Wave-punk (sometimes Elvis Costello-ish) influences. They are probably in the same genre as They Might Be Giants, The Proclaimers, Duran Duran, Elvis Costello and Depeche Mode. Although some may say they are more Deacon Blue than they are The Beautiful South, I think that would just be splitting hairs.
I really would recommend this band and this album and dont think you will be dissapointed if you occasionally like to dabble in the best of the 80s-even if it as the expense of your husband judging you negatively!
