Ooh to be back in the 1980's with my ripped jeans, grolsch bottle topped trainers singing away to the sounds of "When will I be famous".... Well okay I never made it but the thought was there thanks to Bros.
Wandering around Tesco's, which in itself is a rarity because I detest supermarkets with a passion, I ended up in the CD section and suddenly, mouth open and wanting to shout "OhMYGOD" as loud as I can, from the corner of my eye I spotted it.
"The Best of Bros" and it was priced at £3.99, so I quickly shoved it in my trolley and ran to the checkout before someone else could nab it from my grasp.
●A Little on the History of Bros●
Twins Matt and Luke Goss were friends with Craig Logan, the third member of Bros (who later left the group and successfully sued them for unpaid royalties) at Camberley Comprehensive School in Surrey, a firm friendship was formed and the trio set up a pop group to tour and play in local working men's clubs. Despite being booed off stage on a regular basis the trio soon started attracting interest from record companies and managed to secure a recording contract with CBS.
When Bros burst onto the scenes in 1988 as a trio they consisted of Matt and Luke Goss, two blonde haired stunning twins and their drumming friend Craig Logan and most teenage girls liked
either Matt OR Luke, never both of them or they liked Craig. For me, well it had to be Matt and my cousin Julie and I would spend hours mulling over who was fitter Matt or Luke. We would often be found with our ripped jeans and Grolsch bottle topped trainers a trend for well-known Brosettes.
Their debut single, "I Owe You Nothing" was released in August 1987 and went to number two in the charts, their next single "When Will I Be Famous" went one better and reached number one. In 1989 Craig Logan decided he had had enough of the band and left, although the Goss brothers continued to perform under the Bros name it was never quite the same and they both decided to call it a day in 1991.
Their album "Push" which sold over 300,000 copies within its first week of release and in excess of 5 million, worldwide. Over their six year career. Bros recorded three successful albums Push, Changing Faces and The Time), I with them including thirteen Top 5 singles and selling 17 million records, worldwide, Bros became a phenomenon until they split up.
Since splitting up both Matt and Luke have continued with their own Solo careers although both have kept a very low profile until recently. Luke has also entered the world of acting and has stared in a number of films including - Blade II, Frankenstein and is currently filming a film called Private Moments.
(",) The Best of Bros (",)
So 'The Best of Bros', well as a truly devoted Brosette im bound to tell you all that it is a brilliant CD to own aren't I? Correct I am, this is one of the best bargains I have ever found.
Containing 19 Bros songs and over 70 minutes of pure teenage fantasies for £3.99 you'll be hard pushed to find something better in my own opinion.
● When Will I Be Famous - Got to number 2 in 1988 Probably one of the most famous Bros songs that ever was, even today during cheese hour in random nightclubs 'When will I be famous' is often played, especially during your years at University. Released in 1987 this song got to number one.
●Drop the Boy - Got to number 2 in 1988 One of my favourite Bros songs and was released in 1988 featuring both the vocals of both Matt and Luke.
●Madly in Love - Got to number 14 in 1990
This is another my favourite Bros song, released again in 1989 and was one of the only surviving vinyl's that still sits at home in my parents attic. I was actually lucky enough to meet Bros (twice), once at a Smash Hits Poll Winners Party where they signed this very song for me and once during their tour.
●Ten out of Ten - This song is a slow melodic song, sung my Matt Goss and comes from the album 'Time'.
●Cat Amongst the Pigeons - got to number 2 in 1998 and was featured on a double A-Side disc with Silent night.
●Too Much - Got to number 2 in 1989 Again another favourite of mine from the Push Album. Featuring the vocals of Matt Goss and Luke Goss it is very similar in sound to Madly in Love
●Owe You Nothing (3.43) - Got to number 1 in 1988 I Owe You Nothing is my ultimate favourite Bros song and it seemed to be other peoples too as it topped the charts for two weeks in June 1988. Another well paced song that makes good use of synthesisers and light drumming as well as a fine vocal performance from Matt.
●Liar (3.44)
●Chocolate Box (4.00) Chocolate Box featured on the time album and only got to number nine in the UK charts when it was released in October 1989.
●It's a Jungle Out There (4.17) Featured on the album 'Push'.
●Money (4.24) ●I Quit (3.36) ●Changing Faces (4.03) ●Sister (4.24) ●Life's a Heartbeat (4.49) ●Are You Mine? (4.42) - Got to number 12 in 1991 ●Try (3.41) - Got to number 27 in 1991 ●I'll Count the Hours (4.12)
The songs listed above from Money to I'll Count the Hours are not well known Bros songs and do not stand out as well I Owe you nothing, When will I be famous and Too Much simply because they were released in 1990/1991, not long before they split.
The final song on the CD is: ●Silent Night (3.47) and was the B-side to Cat amongst the pigeons.
I absolutely love the album and it does take me back to my youth and back to when the Bros phenomenon started and it is definitely an album that I can happily play over and over again on my mini Ipod.
This CD can be bought online through Amazon, HMV and the usual retailers of music DVD's, prices do vary from £4.00 to £9.99 but my advice to all those long lost Brosettes is to hunt around for a bargain.
