Island trio's 1989 debut album, 3 Feet High & Rising, single-handedly did more to popularise rap music outside the genre's core audience base than any other record to that point, but the band have been made to pay a heavy price for helping make hip-hop one of the biggest selling sectors in popular music. This collection gives the band's legacy a stereotypical overview. There are two discs, but the second half is given over to collaborations and remixes. It's also a limited edition; so many buyers will only get the first half, and will therefore hear only a patchy summation of De La Soul's story so far. Admittedly, every track is exceptional, giving a consistently high-quality listen, but the balance is askew. Six tracks from 3 Feet High & Rising is understandable, but almost ignoring the mainstream-shunned, underground-loved Buhloone Mindstate and Stakes Is High albums is short-sighted. De La Soul are hip-hop's Prince, widely praised for things they did years ago, their new work subjected to unfairly slanted comparisons with their debut. But the best of De La Soul is almost certainly yet to come. --Angus Batey

Having been a fan of De La Soul for a while I was pleased to find out that they were releasing a "best of" album. Having only heard a limited amount of perhaps their more well known material (The Magic Number, Eye Know, Oooh etc) I was looking forward to getting a taste of some of their other work. I was not disapointed. The Album is fantastic. The main CD includes some of the finest HipHop tunes ever produced.
The track listing is below:
Me Myself and I Say No Go Eye Know The Magic Number Potholes In My Lawn Buddy - featuring JUngle Brothers, Q-Tip & Phife Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey) A Roller Skating Jam Named "Saturdays" Keepin' The Faith Breakadawn Stakes is High 4 More - featuring Zhane Oooh All Good? - feat. Chaka Khan Thru Ya City - feat D.V. Alias Khrist Baby Phat - feat Devin The Dude & Elizabeth "Yummy" Bingham Watch Out
Listening to this CD really makes you appreciate music. It never gets boring, you just want to play it again and again! To make it even better I bought the limited edition copy which includes an extra bonus CD which is like another album in its own right! Stuffed full of collaberations and alternative versions the bonus CD just makes the whole package even more desirable.
Stuff all this commercial modern crap like Nelly, the original HipHop is and always will be the best of the best!
