Advantages: Witty, clever and interesting Disadvantages: Some irritating characters, far-fetched in parts
remember from a TV show. The sequence shows a number of mundane events which take on a darker edge in the context of the show; a blood orange being squeezed suddenly makes you wince, the tightening of shoelaces makes you loosen your collar just in case. It is one of the best title sequences I have ever scene and encapsulates the idea of the show perfectly mixing the everyday with the macabre to comic effect.
BAD POINTS:
I really enjoyed the first season of Dexter but I felt the second series lost its way a little. It started to get a little too ridiculous and the introduction of a very annoying main character didn't help matters. Dexter started behaving in ways that didn't really fit with his character and dropped the attention to detail that had served him so well for so long and so it became more difficult to suspend disbelief ...
Advantages: Very funny throughout Disadvantages: storyline lacked bite and punch
Background:
About nine months ago I read my first novel by Jeff Lindsay featuring an usual character called Dexter. I was unsure to be honest what I thought of it, so I was keen to try another one and see if the writers? style either grew on me or turned me off his work completely. Admittedly it took me long enough to get round to it. Since then I have even seen an episode of this on television.
About the author:
Jeff Lindsay was born in America on July 14th 1952. However I should point out this is not his real name, that is Jeffry P. Freunlich. He is best known for his Dexter series of novels, which have now very successfully been transferred as above to television. He has written eight novels, of which the last four have featured Dexter as the lead character.
Synopsis of the book:
Dexter Morgan is a monster ...
Advantages: Interesting concept, unusual writing style Disadvantages: Perhaps a bit slow at first
This is a review originally written for dooyoo.
Intro Having decided that I needed some more books to read I consulted the charity book list at work (books for the bargain price of 25p) and came across "Darkly Dreaming Dexter". I was aware that there is a TV series called "Dexter", so consulted Amazon to see if this was the same thing, and found that it was!
I haven't ever seen the TV programme but have heard good things about it and decided to give the book a go, as I'd found that "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" was the first in the series (I didn't want to come in having missed something) which is what the first series of the TV programme was based upon.
Jeff Lindsay The author Jeff Lindsay (pen name) is American - more can be found about him here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JeffLindsay(writer) He has written ...
