Advantages: Relaxing story telling music with a bit of heart
Disadvantages: Too boring

...OK album, with a nice mix of different artist most of which i have never hear of before. As you can probably tell I'm not usually into this kind of music but being someone always looking to expand my musical horizons, I thought i would give it a go but was not too impressed. Most of the songs featured were not too impressive, many of which sounded very boring and generic for the genre. Track 15, Green Fields of France - Furey & Davey Arthur was probably one of the most impressive tracks on the album; this song featured delicately sung lyrics and an impressive story which i think is based on world war 2. Some of the other tracks were almost up to this standard but were too boring and didn't catch my attention.... Read review

"Nostalgia, sex & music". And it really is!
Review of Now We Are Ten (A Trunk Records Sampler) - Various Artists by blankfrank

Advantages: A rich tapestry of eccentricity and good, but obscure music
Disadvantages: A couple of weak tracks

...with a track from the "Kes" soundtrack. Early 60's jazz from Michael Garrick, more chunks from various soundtracks (eg "Blood On Satan's Claw"). I don't think there is a music track on here that is duff. The overall mood seems to be a combination of pastoral jazz and folk and experimental boundary pushing. And considering that some of this is basically just library music, that says a lot for the good quality of those old music libraries. It genuinely is rather good. Best track for me? "Negatives" by Basil Kirchin. Nostalgia: we've got excerpts from The Clangers soundtrack and also Bod. Yes, Bod. I can hear the brain cells firing up already in anticipation of that famous piccolo(?) sound we heard way back then. The Mike Sammes Singers also do their bit in this area, by giving us the Timex ad from the 60's (see my review of "Music For Biscuits... Read review

Pass Me My Arran Sweater and Let Me Grow A Beard
Review of Rough Guide To Scottish Folk, The - Various Artists by Tuco_666

Advantages: Good Selection Of Old and New
Disadvantages: Induces a Desire to Dust out the arran sweater

...this compliation as an ideal starting point for a deeper exploration of one of Europe's strongest living musical traditions and I wholeheartedley agree with themon these points. The only downpoint on the collection being Wolfstone who were really a second rate Runrig (who were also bloody awful). The rest of it is a fine collection of Reels, Jigs and Laments in English and Scots Gaelic by some of the finest musicans from Scotland. The only point of contention being the inclusion of Ewan Maccoll's Dirty Old Town but since it is a great song and since he could have played for Scotland if he so desired then I will let them away with it. This compilation completley succeeds in what it intends to do, which is to provide the uninitiated with an insight into Scottish Folk Music. If you are curious or just want a sampler of the best that is on offer than you... Read review
