As the Beatles' perpetual dark horse, Harrison rarely got the chance to write and sing ... more
more than one or two songs per album. But once the band split up, the former "quiet one" was quick out of the gate with a series of memorable hit singles that seamlessly merged his budding spirituality and an epic, Phil Spector-inspired pop sensibility. This collection, originally released in 1976, combines seven of Harrison's best-known Beatles numbers, including "Something", "If I Needed Someone", "Here Comes the Sun", and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with a half-dozen early solo hits including "My Sweet Lord", "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)", "You" and "What Is Life". As such, it's a good entry-level Harrison primer.--Scott Schinder

Something has been covered more than 150 times with perhaps Frank Sinatra's version being the best version ever. However hearing the composer singing it is a close second.

When you hear Harrison sing these songs you will hear much more meaning and deliberate feeling inflected into them because they are his songs from his mind and his soul.
His voice is not as distinctive in style as that of John Lennon or Paul McCartney but it does have a very pleasant almost American West Coast soft rock quality to it with a little bit of huskiness added.
Also on the album are some fantastic songs that he wrote for himself, some of which are heavily influenced by his empathy with Bangladesh and the spiritualism of the East. My Sweet Lord, Bangladesh and Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth).
There are varying styles on this album and the track You is a rocking good stomp your feet to effort.
There is some great guitar playing by him in the album, especially on What Is Life.
I will guarantee you that every track on the album is an absolute minimum of very good and after you have listened to it you will view him differently as both a singer and a song writer.

Album Notes
Personnel includes: George Harrison, John Lennon (vocals, guitar); Paul McCartney (vocals, bass); Eric Clapton (guitar); Billy Preston (keyboards); Ringo Starr (drums). Producers: George Harrison, George Martin, Phil Spector. As evidenced on THE BEST OF GEORGE HARRISON, the Quiet Beatle did well in his little corner of Fab Fourdom despite being in the considerable shadow of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The first seven songs on this collection point to Harrison's substantial contributions to the band, with "Taxman," "Here Comes The Sun" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" being some of the more notable Harrison compositions. "Something" was the only song Harrison wrote for the Beatles that became a hit and ended up being covered by a number of artists including Frank Sinatra (who mistakenly credited it to Lennon/McCartney). Having been one of the first rock musicians to experiment with and embrace Eastern culture invariably bore a heavy influence on Harrison's music, most notably on his early solo work. "My Sweet Lord" and "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)" with their messages of spiritual tranquility both topped the charts while "What Is Life" landed in the top 10. Harrison's commitment to the East resulted in a pair of 1972 charity concerts at Madison Square Garden for the people of Bangladesh from which the single "Bangla-Desh" peaked at 23 and earned more money for this personal crusade.
