This James album is one of the best 'best ofs' I think I own. It isn't full of chart toppers and unless you already own a few James albums then you won't have heard of many of the songs. Everyone will have heard ‘Sit Down’, now an anthem, which, unbelievably, was kept from being number one the second time round by the insane Chesney Hawkes. If it did just have top tens on it, this CD would consist of a mere three songs. That’s how underrated James are.
James have been around since 1984 as James, before then they were known as Model Team International- how very catchy! They hail from Manchester and disbanded in, I think, late 2002. They played their last gig in Manchester and I frequently kick myself over not going to see them live.
James were always kinda left out of the whole Britpop scene, unfairly I think, as I always thought their sound was very British and very poppy. However, this turned into a good thing as the death of Britpop didn’t mean the death of James. Result!
Since
their debut in 1985, James have released thirteen albums, this ‘best of’ featuring some of their, well, bests!
Track List 1- Come Home- Good opening song, from ‘Gold Mother (1990)’ 2- Sit Down- British pop music at its very best. Hands up if you’re a student! Originally released in 1989 but failed to get anywhere. From ‘Gold Mother’. 3- She’s A Star- I like to think that this song is about me! It is lovely. From ‘Whiplash (1997)’. 4- Laid- I know this was used on the American Pie OST but I choose to ignore that! James’ finest song. From ‘Laid (1993)’ 5- Waltzing Along- a catchy guitar riff and swinging percussion. From ‘Whiplash’. 6- Say Something – if you’re depressed about boyfriends and their ilk, don’t listen to this one! From ‘Laid’. 7- Born of Frustration- top song, one of their best. Woooooooooooo! From ‘Seven’. 8- Tomorrow- I don’t get on with this one and don’t quite know why. From ‘Whiplash’. 9- Destiny Calling- Genius! Very poppy but cool. 10- Out To Get You- eek, very, very slow. From ‘Laid’ 11- Runaground – Sing along! The lyrics are really sad when you listen to them. 12- Lose Control- Brilliant and haunting. From ‘Gold Mother’ 13- Sometimes- this songs drags a bit, but learn the words and sing. Noones watching…From ‘Laid’ 14- How Was it for You?- I love this! It is sexy. From ‘Gold Mother’ 15- Seven- mellow and reflective, from ‘Seven (1992)’ 16- Sound- not really much to write about this one! From ‘Seven’ 17- Ring The Bells- this sounds like all their other songs blurred into one. From ‘Seven’ 18- Hymn from A Village- James second single and the oldest on the album. Nuff said but it still rocks!
It’s good value as it has 18 tracks on it- im one of those people who feels ripped off if they buy an album with about ten songs on it- and, admittedly, some of the tracks are a bit monotonous but in a good way. like if you’re feeling chilled or something. The album comes to about an hour and ten minutes long
Lead singer Tim Booth (how gorgeous?!) has got a really distinctive voice, which I think is what makes a lot of the song. He can convey a lot of emotion. This thing you notice about his album is that, even though the songs span just under fifteen years, they all sound like they are all recent, or at least all of the same time.
My personal favourites on the album are 'laid', 'sit down', 'how was it for you?', 'destiny calling' , 'say something', 'ring the bells'......a lot of them! It’s just a great album to stick on while you're driving or want a bit of peace and quiet without the quiet.
I own nearly all the other James albums and I do think that if you only buy one of them, I think it should be this one- although I think they should've bought out their 'best of' after the release of 'Millionaires', and included some of the tracks of that because that is an amazing album.
Failing that, the album cover is very pretty.
