Ruby Turner, Brummie soul diva. What? One of the best British soul singers of the past 30 years is a Brummie? Well, yes… SORT of. In truth, Ruby was born in Jamaica, but grew up in Birmingham from the age of nine.
The Very Best of Ruby Turner is exactly that, the very best of one of the finest soul singers of her generation. She's also very pretty, but hey, let's try to keep my natural male bias for very beautiful women out of this review!
Whether Ruby is singing new soul songs, or delivering some of the great soul standard classics, her pure, soaring voice really is a cut above the rest. Ruby's ability to hold and deliver a tune is so impressive that she is able to attract soul stars such as Jimmy Ruffin, The Temptations and Jonathon Butler to perform with her as some very special guests. She was joined on What Becomes of the Broken Hearted by Jimmy Ruffin, on Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) by The Temptations, and on If Your Ready, Come go With me, by Jonathon Butler. All, of course, featured on this CD.
And although I have to say that I really do prefer the Etta James version, Ruby Turner's version of I Would Rather Go Blind is a powerful, yet delightfully understated version of this very special song.
On this CD Ruby proves that her voice has the range and capacity to cover all types of soul music. From the powerful soul songs right through to the quiet and thoughtful soul ballads, such as the aforementioned I Would Rather go Blind.
It's Gonna Be Alright, also featured on this CD, is such a good song that it went to the Number 1 spot in the American R&B chart. Only one of a handful of British songs to win this accolade. Not bad for a Brummie girl, from Jamaica, hey? I think that Ruby Turner is somewhat under-rated in the United Kingdom. If you do get the opportunity to listen to this CD, I think you might want to agree with me.
