Advantages: Gives insight into the Scott Walker's early influences Disadvantages: The best was yet to come
ScottWalker gained fame and notoriety as a band member of the 'WalkerBrothers' in the mid 1960s - a band perhaps best known for their worldwide hit "TheSunAin'tGonnaShineAnymore". But by 1966, Walker had had enough of commercial sound that the band were producing and the superstardom that came with it. He decided to jump ship and seek solitude in a monastery on the Isle of Wight. He subsequently emerged as a determined solo artist initially influenced by Belgian singer Jacques Brel, but always focused upon his own unique style based around his rich penetrating baritone vocal that would later evolve into an existential angst ridden crooner. 'Scott I' was first released in 1967 and was Walker's first solo album after his work with the WalkerBrothers. It was to be the first in a sequence of four solo albums released in the late 1960 ...
Advantages: incredibly unique music Disadvantages: perhaps a little too bleak at times
Blimey - what an album! It's not, however, very likeable. Scott's previous record Climate Of Hunter, for all it's oddities, is still a collection of relatively traditional songs. Tilt isn't.
But the opening "Farmer In The City" is still one of the best tracks ever recorded and still, after 12 years and goodness knows how many plays, brings me to the verge of tears at the "Paulo, take me with you..." bit. Amazing. The strings are stunningly powerful.
"The Cockfighter" is weird beyond belief, especially the way Scott's voice fractures as he sings "it's a beautiful ni-HIght" which is just freaky. The minute of disturbing scratching noises at the start of the track weirds me out too. A whole new category of music - industrial classical.
"Bouncer See Bouncer" goes on way too long before that lovely shaft of light, the orchestra backed ...
Advantages: stunningly arranged and sung, mysterious songs Disadvantages: none
Three" is thrilling, (yes even Billy Ocean's backing vocals work well) and Sleepwalker's Woman" is stunningly beautiful, like an updated "Boy Child" and just as gorgeous.
Side two, follows the same format as side one. But on "Track Six" things get rather more off the wall. What is all that squiddling and squeaking after Scott sings "The ceilings are rising and falling"? It's certainly very unsettling. And the lyrics of "Track Seven" are quite disturbing too - but you could probably guess that anything that begins "Stump of a drowner?" is going to be somewhat dark. Oddly however this is the most upbeat, musically, and even has a somewhat out of place muscular bluesy guitar solo squirted all over the second part of the song. It doesn't quite work for me, and is perhaps the weakest part of the album.
The other thing I don't think that works ...
