Best Of Strange Cargo - William Orbit

Additional notes

Album Notes: Personnel: William Orbit (various instruments); Beth Orton, Cleo Torres, Divine Bashim, Christine Leach (vocals); Rico Conning (piano, strings).
Recorded at Guerilla Studios, London, England.
Before he became one of the most sought-after producers in pop music, lending a winning touch to recordings by Madonna, Blur, and others, William Orbit put out a series of three releases: STRANGE CARGO 1, 2, and 3. These largely instrumental recordings mine various trends in the dance and electronic music of the 1990s, incorporating elements of ambient, techno, and electronica, without falling into any particular genre. Orbit's production is clean and spacious, with acoustic guitars, strings, and other touches replacing the music's inherently artificial edge with an organic warmth.
Orbit's sense of playfulness and penchant for odd sounds transforms these recordings into something well beyond merely pleasant (i.e. forgettable) electronic music (although the gentle tropicalia of "Via Caliente" and "Riding to Rio" would not offend a stodgy visiting aunt). One of the finest moments is "Water From a Vineleaf," a heavenly dance track with vocals by the talented English songstress Beth Orton. The tune approximates a legal Ecstasy trip better than most songs ever could. Two versions are offered here, the original and a remix by Underworld. Other highlights include an interesting cover of the Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way" and the hypnotic, dub-style "Harry Flowers."

Review of William Orbit - William Orbit by  ejp79

Advantages: enduring
Disadvantages:

...I think musically the strongest of William Orbit's many projects, the Strange Cargo series is inoffensive and diverse, combining many styles in one digestible bundle of something nearly but not quite Pop. This time around he brings in more dance elements and keeps the jazz to a minimum. Every track is distinctly Orbit, loaded with special effects. Vocals are sprinkled here and there but are never in the foreground. My favourite track is "hazy shade of random" it has all the traits of the far east, it's truly a wonderful piece of music. Individual tracks incorporate ambient dub, trance techno, dark spacemusic. Is it good? Yes. I think when listening to this album you can close your eyes and pretend you're somewhere else........ Going into Orbit
Review of Pieces In A Modern Style - William Orbit by  combat_claire

Advantages: great to listen to
Disadvantages: none

...Wow what a great cd that i have purchased by William Orbit, it is called Pieces in a Modern Style and also includes his top ten hit Barber's Adagio for Strings, this is classical music as has never been heard before, it is inspiring and easy to listen to. He has come up with an album which is diverse and is essential listening for everyone. Pieces in a modern style and Barber's Adagio for strings are not the only cds that he has been involved with recently, he also produced another masterpiece with madonna's American Pie.... A triumph for Williams and the Potter franchise!
Review of Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban - John Williams by  ILoveBargains

Advantages: It's the best Harry Potter score yet - deeper, darker and inspired!
Disadvantages: Where have the old themes gone??

...could want from the new Harry Potter score! It begins with a slow, haunting variation on the “Double Trouble” theme over a very quiet harp accompaniment. You can also hear some small bells periodically that are again reminiscent of the time travel theme (see Track 18). What makes this track so great though is the sudden change halfway through. After some sweeping, romantic strings, suddenly a dramatic, racing string section begins in the minor key. This forms the bridge between the slow opening and the quick flute solo that twists and turns up and down before the end of the piece. An interesting and original end to a great track. Track 10: The Portrait Gallery. A very strange variation on the “Double Trouble” theme, with odd instruments too. Clearly Williams wanted the strange mixed-style sound for this track (like in...
