...If "Hello" (1973) is Status Quo's best album outside the compilations, "Blue For You" (1976) runs it a close second. Not only do the songs and playing feature the band at their best, but it all sounds so immediate, as if they went straight into the studio, rolled the tapes, did the miniumum of overdubs and mixing, and left it at that. The Top 10 single "Rain" is a classic, and "Ring Of A Change" is one of their songs that crashes out of the speakers at 100 mph, yet still has a marvellously catchy hook. For contrast, the title track is a rolling, blues number that makes you wish writer and bassist Alan Lancaster contributed more than he did to their repertoire, and "Rollin' Home" (same title but different song entirely to their 1986 hit) is a good showcase for Bob Young's harp blowing. The medium to fast paced numbers on here include Sweet Freedom itself, a top ten single over here in 1986, from the soundtrack of the film "Running Scared" (no I've never heard of it either), "shine sweet free, shine your light on me, you are the magic, you're right where I wanna be now", a great call and response chorus and the ultimate feelgood tune. If I remember right the video had Walter Payton, running back for the American football team Chicago Bears on it, but don't quote me on that.
