Great Modern Carmen
Review of Bizet: Carmen by operalover2000

Advantages: Smooth voiced protagonists, nice sound
Disadvantages: Slightly tame Escamillo, maybe lacking in some french style

...Arguably the best recording of Carmen in the past 30 years. Teresa Berganza has a smooth and warm voice here, rather darker than Victoria de los Angeles (Thomas Beecham conducts, EMI) but smoother and lighter than Maria Callas (Georges Pretre conducts, EMI) and Regine Resnik (Schippers conducts, Decca). Her performance is similarly balanced - dramatic without being too vampish and with that sultry latin quality (a little bit lacking in Victoria de los Angeles in my opinion). She sings with greater precision in the runs and leaps than Resnik and her voice seems like balm after the altogether different instrument of Maria Callas (even at the later's best she growls rather more than Berganaza which you either love or hate). Placido Domingo is a king amongst recent Don Joses on record. Jose Carreras with Karajan may bring more passion... Read review

Nice cover Beautiful Music
Review of Great Escape, The - Blur by johnty110

Advantages: Damon Albarn, Guitar chords, The Universal
Disadvantages: Yuko & Hiro

...This album has received a lot of flack but it had a lot to live up too. Blur are one of the most instantly recognizable Brit bands of the nineties and one of the most popular as well. They have a great set-up; as well Damon Albarn is a great singer especially at the type of music Blur play. Alex James is a brilliant bassist and his greatness can best be heard on Song 2 by the great way he uses slides to produce that opening couple of bars. Dave Rowntree is a fine drummer and his rhythm is impeccable. Graham Coxon is just frighteningly talented. While Blur's best album (not including Greatest hits) is Parklife the great escape is definitely a close second. Three singles have been released from this album, Country House, Charmless Man and The Universal. All of which are fantastic especially The Universal which also has a brilliant... Read review

OUT OF MY LIFE
Review of Back In My Life - Deejay, Alice by coop

Advantages: earnt me money
Disadvantages: cheesy beat

...Alice Deejay is the illegitimate love child of ATB and the Venga Boys, naturally both parents have disowned this musically wayward offspring who would not even find comfort in the decaying arms of Mother Teresa. No doubt Alice Deejay’s A&R men would dig up the Saint’s grave for an ‘interesting’ colloboration and photo opportuinity, whilst selling their living grandparent internal organs. “ Of course were in it for the music “ Yeah right, never have such heights or depths of media whoring been reached since the relationship between Chris Evans and Geri. Incidentally Want you back in my life is part of the soundtrack to the inevitable docu-soap when chris met Geri, hows that for cross pollination !... Read review
