Non-cynics, however, will appreciate what makesThe Very Best Of...unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross-selection of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through to 1988's "Kokomo". All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums,The Very Best of the Beach Boysis, in many ways, a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis'30 No 1 Hitsand the Beatles'1were of the King and the Fab Four.--Bill Holdship

Advantages: All the Beach Boys hits in a boxed set Disadvantages: Some people really will hate this type of music
...Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of The BeachBoys" is one of the finest compilations of a major musical artist yet released. Inside, you will find an exceptionally well-chosen selection of BeachBoy hits, album tracks, alternate takes, experiments and other assorted oddities. There are no essential songs or performances missing, although one might quibble about not finding a personal favourite among the extensive track listing. Even then, I'll wager that the compilers at Capitol have second-guessed even the most fervent BeachBoys fanatics. Here is the proof as to why in some circles Brian Wilson is considered a pop music genius on the order of a Paul McCartney or a Stevie Wonder. The sound is terrific, given that the original recordings have some unusual imbalances and are very trebly--no doubt due to Brian Wilson's rumoured deafness...

Advantages: Well-packaged Disadvantages: Shows the band past their prime - for diehard fans only
...Having made their name with Capitol Records, at the end of 1969 the BeachBoys signed with Reprise (US and Canada) and Stateside/EMI (rest of the world), while providing for the records to be released with their own 'Brother Records' imprint or logo. (A new deal at the end of the decade saw them switch the parent company to CBS Caribou, but that's another story).
Having dominated the music of the 60s in a way that few other bands did, the 70s sadly found them almost a spent force. Brian Wilson's drug abuse and fragile temperament, and growing ill-feeling between the other Wilson brothers and Mike Love, cost them dearly. There were to be no more ground-breaking singles, though they came up with some passable efforts. "California Saga" was the closest they got to a good commercial pop tune, and "It's OK", based on an instrumental...

Advantages: Good classic hits! Disadvantages: Will eventually get repetitive
...dance like a maniac, I was at my school disco at the student union one Friday night, and Good Vibrations came on, and twas so much fun!!
I think this 3 CD release was a very good idea, because The BeachBoys seem to epitomise fun summers, the Platinum Collection of the Sounds of Summer sums it all up! So, one of the first things to talk about is the…
PRICE
The RRP for the 3 CD’s is £20.99, however if you do your shopping around, it’s very easy to buy this for a lot less. The cheapest price from the market place at amazon.co.uk is £8.15, which I think is an absolutely fantastic bargain!! Second best, 101cd.com supplies this for £8.95 which is still a great bargain. The highest price I found on the general Amazon website was £12.98, which I still think is perfectly acceptable for a 3 CD box set. To help your browsing, this CD comes...
