Stop It (Games People Play)" that the Spinners really got moving. They emerged as one of the poppiest of the '70s soul bands, which cost them dearly in credibility. But their best songs were stunning--and by the time original vocalist Philippe Wynne left the group, in 1977, they'd racked up enough successes to stuff a greatest-hits package from top to bottom. Atlantic's 1978 "Best of the Spinners" LP was that package, although this release augments it with later hits like "Working My Way Back to You" and "Cupid." Another anthology package, a double-CD released by Atlantic Records, packs in even more, but the essentials are all here. --Gavin McNett

Additional notes
Album Notes: Like the Isley Brothers, who didn't achieve their greatest success until after they left Motown Records, the Spinners were, for whatever reason, an uneasy fit at the House of Gordy, scoring only a couple of R&B hits in the second half of the '60s before finally getting their one big pop crossover, \"It's a Shame.\" This collection of their oeuevre from that period is interesting nonetheless, in part because you get some insight into how the Motown assembly line functioned. Noteworthy tracks--apart from the aforementioned hits (\"I'll Always Love You\" and \"Truly Yours\")--include \"Bad, Bad Weather,\" which has a groove similar to the Temptations' \"Ain't Too Proud to Beg,\" and a gritty version of David Ruffin's solo hit \"My Whole World Ended.\"
Advantages: Original, intelligent and total genius! Disadvantages: Maybe slightly underproduced, but that only serves to give the album a rawer feel
...lyrics and an anthemic tune. "Saw two shadow men on the Vallance Road. Said they'd pay me for your address, Oh I was so bold, I said you see these two cold fingers, These crooked fingers I show, You a way to mean no"
"I got a little secret for ya..." is what you'll hear from Carl Barat as 'Tell The King' begins, and these lyrics are somewhat apt for a track that tends to be largely forgotten from the Libertines discography. It's a dig at people putting the band down, despite what they'd achieved which is easily interpreted at the start with the lyrics "Even now there's something to be proud about, you'll come up the hard way and they'll remind you everyday, you're nothing!"
The album finishes with 'The Boy Looked At Johnny,' 'Begging,' 'The Good Old Days' and 'I Get Along' which combined make a great end to one of the best debut albums...

Advantages: Memories of christmas past and thought of Christmas future. Disadvantages: None
...***Christmas tunes!***
December is half way through, Christmas is coming, the shops are full of cd's to buy for presents, listen to in the car and lots of them have a Christmas theme. I nearly bought one, was very tempted, but didn't and then when I got home and looked to see what I have already in my collection there it was, the cd that I nearly paid £12.99 for in a local large supermarket. Last year I paid £14.99 for it so this year it is a bargain.
***TheBest CHRISTMAS ALBUM In the World….Ever!***
I put it in my pc and it started to play.
***What is it?***
This is a two cd album, with 21 tracks on cd one and 23 tracks on cd 2 so I have lots of Christmas hits to listen to.
***CD ONE***
Starts with the haunting tones of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Happy Xmas (War is Over) what a wonderful sentiment and if only it were...

Advantages: Smokie at their best Disadvantages: Absolutely none
...,usually one would think that the original is always the best but on this album I have to disagree.
Smokie not only maintain their classic sound with their trademark harmonies sounding powerfully beautiful, but each cover made me wonder....What if Smokie had to get these songs first??.The arrangement, mix and the Smokie touch left me in no doubt that Smokie are still able to rock and still have the ability to amaze.
This is proven to me in tracks such as 'It Never Rains In Southern California",'Arms Of Mary' and 'Still The One' by Shania Twain. The Twain cover truly amazed me as it was turned from a truly romantic ballad into a true Smokie production. The harmonies again flawless against a fantastic musical arrangement.Fans of the original artists may decide either way if Smokie did these covers justice but for me they certainly did.
I had...
