The shops are awash with "Best of" compilations which turn out to contain one top twenty single and a heap of instantly forgettable fillers. It is very rare to find one which is packed full of quality music. The Best of Van Morrison is one of the later. Make no mistake, this is the genuine ... Read review

Van is definately the man Review ofBest Of Van Morrison Vol.1, The - Van Morrisonby

Advantages: some brilliant songs Disadvantages: that Cliff duet
...full of quality music. The Best of Van Morrison is one of the later. Make no mistake, this is the genuine article.
This CD contains twenty mainly outstanding tracks from Ireland's hero. If you think you don't know any Van songs then this recording may surprise you. It certainly surprised me. The majority of these tracks are commonplace on the likes of Virgin and Radio 2's Johnny Walker show. (and no doubt on other decent radio stations I don't get ... ...companies take note!) A discounted Best of from HMV and I'm in heaven (when you smile).
The CD opens strongly with well known tracks like "Bright Side of the Road", "Gloria", "Moondance", "Baby Please Don't Go", "Have I Told You Lately" and "Brown Eyed Girl". An absolutely storming start to any CD with some exquisite music coupled with Van's clever lyrics. As a previous non-fan I hadn't heard most of the other tracks on the CD (exceptions being ...

Alighter side of Jazz. Review ofBest Of Van Morrison Vol.1, The - Van Morrisonby
Elffriend
Advantages: Most of his best songs Disadvantages: Cliff does not belong here.
...opens with all of his best songs, "Dark Side of the Road", Gloria, "Moondance", "brown-eyed girl" to name a few.
There were a few songs I was not familiar with, "Did ye get healed", "Dweller on the Threshold".
Van's songs span three decades, he is still popular now. Hence the duet with Cliff, an okay song, but Cliff is out of his element here.
Most of the tracks are from the 70's, when Van must have been a bit of a hell-raiser. Look between the ... ...must have been tripping on something.
Sometime in the late 70's or early 80's, he got a dose of religion, but absorbed them so well in his songs, they seemed to belong there.
"Have I told you lately that I love you" can be classed as a love song , or a hymn, either way, it is one of my favourites.
Now, a good albumn to me, evokes memories of my past. "Brown-eyed Girl" reminds me of my first love affair, behind the bike-sheds at school.

Greatest Hits Review ofBest Of Van Morrison Vol.1, The - Van Morrisonby
Orinoco
Advantages: Disadvantages:
This album reminds you just how incredibly good Van Morrison is. From the initial cheerful melodies of “Bright Side Of The Road” to the closing moments of the final track, “Dweller On The Threshold,” I was completely hooked. Classic hits such as “Moondance,” “Brown Eyed Girl” and the ultimate love song “Have I Told You Lately” are all on here, along with songs you may not be so familiar with. However, it is these songs which give you the nicest surprise, ...
