I don't usually like rock compilations. You can almost guess the tracks that will be on them, the same tracks as hundreds of others. But this one surprised me - so much so that I bought it.

This is a double CD with 39 power ballads of good pedigree. There are some excellent tracks here spanning decades of power ballads - from recent instant classics such as Chad Kroegers "Hero" to old standards like Starship's "Nothing's gonna stop us now".

You will know most tracks on here, even if you think you don't by rreading the track list. When you plat it through you will find yourself recognising tracks and realising that you knew them but didn't know what they were called.

There are some great tracks here that I haven't heard for years, like "Because the night" by Patti Smith and "Keep on loving you" by REO Speedwagon< which always reminds me of travelling through america when I was 15. I wouldn't want to go and buy an album by these groups but it is great to have these tracks - they bring back so many memories.

Other highlights include "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles which is an awsome track, "Every rose has it's thorn" by Poison and "Against all odds" by Phil Collins.

Track List Disc 1
1. Hero - Chad Kroeger - A new classic rock track, quite melodic

2. We Are The Champions - Queen - A good old classic that everyone will know and bop to.

3. The Best - Tina Turner - A good one to sing along to

4. Because The Night - Patti Smith - an awsome track that is not heard enough, you might not think you know it, but you will when you hear it

5. The One I Love - R.E.M. - Not a bad tune and not one that you are sick of hearing like losing my religion

6. I Drove All Night - Roy Orbison - another classic track, very moody and full of tension

7. The Power Of Love - Huey Lewis & The News - a good upbeat track, very powerful

8. Heaven Is A Place On Earth - Belinda Carlisle - a bit of a lame track in my opinion, more pop than power ballad.

9. Alone - Heart - an excellent track from the queens of rock, proves that girls can do it to.

10. Is This Love - Whitesnake - a well known power ballad from these giants of rock

11. Black Velvet - Alannah Myles - lovely vocals and a haunting feel makes this track one of the best on this album

12. Died In Your Arms, (I Just) - Cutting Crew - I don't know why, but I have never liked this song, one of the low points for me.

13. You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night) - Meat Loaf - it wouldn't be a power balad album without Meatloaf would it? One of his better offerings before he went too theatrical.

14. Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler - I loved this from the first time I heard it - and it still sounds good today.

15. China In Your Hand - T Pau - what a voice - a beautiful song.

16. Bitch - Meredith Brooks - back to more upbeat now, this is real girl-power, great to dance to on a girly night.

17. How You Remind Me - Nickelback - another instant classic from Chad Kroeger, his voice is so appealing.

18. Love Hurts - Nazareth - a classic old track from these classic old rockers

19. Every Rose Has It's Thorn - Poison - a proper weepy track, the lyrics are great and still bring a tear to my eye.

20. Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor - again, outstanding lyrics brilliantly delivered by the shaven head of Sinead

Track List Disc 2
1. Drive - Cars (The) - again this is a track that I just never liked, nothing wrong with it, just never moved me.

2. Broken Wings - Mr. Mister - a proper power ballad with a chorus that is belted out

3. Hard To Say I'm Sorry - Chicago - aww, this is another song that still gets under my skin

4. Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) - Phil Collins - well written, well executed, very moody and melodic

5. To Be With You - Mr. Big - bit of a cheesy love song really, not a power ballad in my opinion, however I love this song and I'm glad it's here.

6. I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner - I'm a bit tired of hearing this - it is on just about every soft rock compilation I've seen.

7. Living Years, The - Mike & The Mechanics - an excellent song but again a bit of a weepy, the lyrics are thought-provoking

8. Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - Starship - more upbeat and bouncy than the last few, a nice little pick me up.

9. Keep On Loving You - REO Speedwagon - everyone should have this in thier collection - it is an ultimate power ballad and the voice of Kevin Cronin is gorgeous

10. We Belong - Pat Benetar - another girl rocking well, this is quite a dreamy track but still powerful with great harmonies

11. Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds - this track was used on the soundtrack for "the Breakfast Club", a film by john Hughes, and did very well in the charts because of it. A good track

12. Missing You - John Waite - a favourite with a lot of people, again you might not think you know it, but you will be singing along when you play it

13. Isn't It Time - Babys (The) - an interesting choice for this album as it is not well known, but a good track nonetheless

14. When I See You Smile - Bad English - a nice breezy track from this well known band

15. It Must Have Been Love - Roxette - a bit chart hit and again a track that found fame from a movie, this time Pretty Woman.

16. Eternal Flame - Bangles (The) - This did so well in the charts that I got sick listening to it - still am and I tend to skip this track

17. All By Myself - Eric Carmen - a good tune and well deserving of a place on this album

18. Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol - I used to play this to death when I was younger, I'm pleased to say it sounds just a good today

19. I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) - Meat Loaf - I don't like this as much as the other Meatloaf track on this compilation, but I'm sure a lot of people love it.

I hope you have found this review useful. thanks for reading.

A word of warning - if you play this double CD in the car, be careful - I found myself driving quite fast, singing along and swaying in my seat!
