...for Joe’s fourth album entitled Better Days. So I thought I’d fill in the time by adding my own opinion. Now Joe is just one of those artists that you can listen to forever and never tire of. Well that’s the case for me especially with his last album. If you’re new to Joe and his style then the best of his works I could recommend to you would have to be on his third album (released a couple of years back now) My Name Is Joe. So before I get back ... ...the touching Ghetto Child and Better Days.
Out of 5 stars I would rate this album at 4.5 stars.
An album strictly for women, for lovin’ and the variety of tracks mean that you can listen to this album any time of the day!

Well while I’m waiting for Ciao to put up a section for another artist I requested, I noticed that there were no reviews for Joe’s fourth album entitled Better Days. So before I get back to the point of reviewing his current album I’ll attempt to sum up Joe’s particular style of music just as a little introduction and background. (Bear with me I’ll get to the point in a bit!) Joe has a unique blend of soul and RnB which often reminds me of the style of Tyrese and R Kelly but his tunes are easier to listen to. He is definitely a favourite with the ladies and has a sensual and sexy voice to match. He is well known for his romantic tracks and his lyrics show that Joe certainly knows how to treat a lady. Oh and did I mention this guy has the most sensual voice ever?!!
Ok so on to the album review.
Track listing is as follows:
1. Let's Stay Home Tonight 2. Better Days 3. What If A Woman 4. Alone 5. Isn't This The World 6. Ghetto Child ft Shaggy & The Boys Choir of Harlem. 7. I Like Sexy Girls 8. Here She Comes 9. Lover's Prayer 10. Changed Man 11. I Understand 12. She Used 2 Luv Me 13. World Of Girls 14. Let's Stay Home Tonight Remix Ft. Petey Pablo
The album shows a much more mature Joe who is singing about wider social issues than his normal romancing- the-ladies kind of song. He steps forward and sings about issues like teenage pregnancies and young mothers going it alone in the album titled track “Better Days”.
He then goes on to challenge men in general and if they could cope if the roles of men and women were reversed in “What If A Woman” – one of my personal faves on this album!
Joe also talks about the ghetto children and life in the ghetto in collaboration with Shaggy and The Boys Choir of Harlem.
"I Understand" is another fave of mine in which Joe is on about wife battering and encouraging victims "..to walk away before it gets too late." A touching track.
These tracks show us Joe’s diversity as an artist.
However, not wanting to disappoint, there are also some classic Joe tracks on the album like the first track “Lets Stay Home Tonight.” (Another personal fave). This track is basically about lovers spending time together with NO interruptions and a snippet of the lyrics are: “…Wanna spend some quality time, I’m talking no phones, no friends, no business, I sent the kids to your mama’s.." Try playing this track when you want to get the message across….LOL. The album includes a remix to this track with label mate Petey Pablo an upcoming new Hip-Hop artist. I like this remix. It sounds like a completely different track! If you thought the above was straight to the point then you haven’t heard nothing yet! This is a “naughtier” version of the original, which is much funkier and the tune sticks in your head – well it did in mine! Some of the lyrics pages on the net omitted some of the words so I decided if you really want to know then go listen to this track yourself or you can search for the lyrics. Now imagine the response if you played this one to get your message across?? ; )
Another classic Joe track on this album would have to be “Lovers Prayer” which I have to say is just simply beautiful. To give you the gist of this track take a look at some of the lyrics: “…I pray that our love is more than enough to weather the storm. I pray that you're strong the nights that I'm gone and you're home alone…”
Joe gets reflective on us and recognises his frailties in tracks like Alone, Changed Man and She Used 2 Luv Me. All these refer to his recent relationship break up. Out of these tracks I like the catchy tune of “She Used 2 Luv Me” and “Alone”.
“Isn’t This The World” talks about the conscience of the world and is very appropriate for current state of affairs around the world. A look at the lyrics shows us its appropriateness: "..What we gotta do me and you we have to change our selfish ways no matter who else does, we have to rise rise above come together in love."
Other tracks on this album are “I like sexy girls” which is a pretty upbeat and chirpy track which will get you bobbing your head and toe tapping at least.
“World of Girls” is a smooth laid back track with an alright tune in which he talks about his travels and all the girls.
The first time I heard “Here she comes” I was laughing at the lyrics. It’s certainly a very different sounding track in that the beat and the music are very catchy.
Overall we see a lot of experimentation from Joe in this album. His best works are undoubtedly “All That I am” and “My Name Is Joe” – His two earlier albums. I have read a few reviews that don’t give Joe much respect for this effort yet it has to be said he deserves respect for being bold and experimenting. He addresses topics that other artists are walking away from and he does it beautifully as in I understand, the touching Ghetto Child and Better Days. Out of 5 stars I would rate this album at 4.5 stars. An album strictly for women, for lovin’ and the variety of tracks mean that you can listen to this album any time of the day!

Advantages: RnB, Soul, slow tracks, various upbeat tracks, great voice and vocals Disadvantages: None
...give up sunshine, there'll be Better Days...Keep your head up'
'Better Days' is my favourite track on this album and it stands out mainly due to the lyrics and message which many can relate to but also the beats and soundtrack are really a good listen. A slow chilled out track with really good content.
'What If A Woman' is the second single from this album and it's another slow track which has interesting lyrics and is addressed to the guys, asking ... ...as you do, treated you as badly as you treated them, would you take it? The lyrics are down to earth and a good listen.
'Ghetto Child' is a really unique track from Joe on this album. Again, lovely lyrics here..
'Just because I'm a ghetto child, I won't live down to your expectations...' , 'believe that a ghetto child can rise to the highest elevation', 'I can see the best in me, can you?' and 'It's not where you're from, it's where you're gonna ...

Advantages: More more more Joe Disadvantages: Slightly too deviant form the usual Joe
Classic Joe is given a revamp to appeal to a more alternative audience, and is largely though not universally successful in this latest offeirng.
With more melodic lyrics, smooth beats and of course Joe's silky smooth voice, the discerning listener is given a certain framework of what to expect.
However, dealing with issues such as domestic violence and ghetto children, Joe tries to contextualise his music, to moderately good effect.
Presumably ... ...to a politically motivated audience, but I'm not sure whether it will catch on.
Nevertheless, he does contribute some old school Joe, particularly smash-hit "Let's Stay Home Tonight", pure sex-fuelled love juice. Absolutely superb also is "World of Girls", which shares Joe's experiences of the world of the female, and it is just the relief required form the relative intensity of other tracks.
Perhaps also in Joe's typical style, but expressing ...

Advantages: Mostly an excellent track line-up Disadvantages: 1 or 2 schmaltzy numbers
...On his fourth project, Better Days (2001), he diplays his growing versatility as an evidently serious recording artist. His work has great depth expoloring serious and relevant human issues and expresses genuinley deep, honest emotion. He has an undeniable flair for ballads with such offerings as What If A Woman, Alone and Isn't This The World. The gentle and sensual musical arrangements which have all the emphasis and elements of the modern day ... ...undeniably timeless appeal. The quality in his work is consistent throughout and the album does delve into urban, late-night R&B numbers such as the sultry Let's Stay Home Tonight, Ghetto Child (featuring an effective interlude from another gifted R&B artist, Shaggy), the playful I Like Sexy Girls and a few truly sensational numbers like Lovers Prayer, Changed Man, I Understand to name but a few. There is such passion in his work thats it's questionable ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Better Days - Joe"
Advantages: Great songs, cool art work, lively Disadvantages: a few songs let it down
between the chorus and the verses (that might not make much sense but once you listen to it it will). A good beat and good for a bit of casual moshing in private.
Welcome to Paradise-
In my opinion this is one of the best songs on the album. Green Day have released this song twice and this is the better version (Billie Joe's singing gets alot better he progresses through his career) Great guitar riff, great bass line, great drums, great lyric and just great!
Bastet Case-
Another great song, and yes another great bass line! Interesting lyrics and quite light hearted (IMO). The music is also very good
When I come around-
Started with some great riffs from the guitar and the bass but I'm not really big on this song. The beat is good but Billie Joes vocals and the music can get abit repetative.
She-
Very prominent bass line ...
portion of the media have this down as an Anti-America record, but upon reading the lyrics and really listening to the songs, it turns out this may, in some freakish way, be pro-America. I had a comment on my first review saying that this may be the case as it shows the right to ?express yourself? and ?be different? and to that person I say well done for making a damn good point. Being British, all this pro and anti-American stuff doesn?t apply, but it is easy to see that there is no better form of expression than through music, and in Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day have a damn good man for the job. Lyrically, musically and mentally ?.. ?American Idiot? is a masterpiece. What has come before, Dookie, Nimrod etc, was the set-up for an assault on the mind that is just so irresistible that I find it extremely difficult to turn my CD player off ...
Personnel includes: JOE, Shaggy, The Boys Choir Of Harlem. Producers: JOE, Allstar, The Neptunes. BETTER DAYS was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album. "Let's Stay Home Tonight" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. R&B love man Joe (if you need to write him a check, his last name is Thomas) spent a fair part of the '90s working a number of variations on the romantic soul crooning style that makes women of all ages blush at 100 paces. He's known for his sensual vocals and lush, smooth R&B production. That hasn't changed on BETTER DAYS, as Joe seems to still be the original smoothie, laying down heartfelt evocations of love and lust with skill and verve. But the lyrical subject matter is a bit wider than on Joe's previous albums, as he takes on larger social issues (witness the collaboration with Shaggy and the Boys Choir of Harlem on "Ghetto Child" for example). Despite the broadened thematic material, though, Joe never gets too high-minded to leave behind the likes of the undeniably carnal "I Like Sexy Girls." And the sexy girls undoubtedly reciprocate.
Album Reviews
Vibe (2/02, pp.119-20) - 3.5 discs out of 5 - "...This is the album Michael Jackson wishes he had made....Joe sings with a contemplative, low-key style...explaining a lot about his particular style....DAYS has a gentle, thoughtful tone...Musically, he weaves a welcome inventiveness into conventional soul music..."
