So then who can name more than one decent band to have come out of Cornwall in recent years, or even name just one. Well Haven are that band, coming from ST Just in deepest darkest Cornwall. They decided in 1999 that there was no way they would break onto the scene and decided to move up to Manchester.
Upon arrival in Manchester they were spotted by former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and this was relected heavily in this their debut album. Advantages: Great chillout album Disadvantages: Some tracks are very similar
...eventually get them noticed.
Between the senses is their debut album and is a very chilled out album. It’s the kind of music that you can put on after a rubbish day, pour yourself a glass of wine and just relax to.
It has twelve tracks as follows:
Beautiful thing
Where is the love
Say something
Out of reach Still tonight
I need someone
Til the end (it is spelt correctly!)
Lately
Let it live
Is this bliss
Keep on giving in
Holding on
... ...of other groups because that wouldn’t be right as I think they should be merited on their own work. To be honest a lot of tracks on the album are quite similar in sound because Gary Briggs has a very distinguished, soulful voice, but having said that it is not a bad thing. This is why I haven’t written a description next to each track.
If you are looking for an up and coming band and want something with fantastic vocals then go for this and I’m ...

Advantages: Good songs, great vocals Disadvantages: Lacks Variation
...a bit like a mix between Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke and his voice raises the level of every track on this album.
Listening to the album not that many tracks seem to stand out that much because after a while it becomes a bit samey. Singles 'Til the end' and 'say something' are probably two of the best songs on the album but it's hard really to find a bad song in there. It's not the type of album where you skip you can skip through tracks, one song ... ...it can be a very relaxing listen as it all seems to blend together.
In summary well work buying if you like soaring vocals and epic guitar music, I just hope anything they release in the future varies a little bit more or it might not be worth buying if you have the first album. ...

Advantages: Guitars and an incredible voice Disadvantages: Bit samey
Between the Senses is Manchester's reply to the Americans onslaught with albums such as Is This It by The Strokes and White Blood Cells by the White Stripes taking Britain by storm. Haven have produced, with the help of ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, the best guitar album of 2002. Including singles Til The End, Beautiful Thing, Let It Live and the recent top 40 hit, Say Something, this album is a fantastic start from the new band. Stand out tracks ... ...incredible Out Of Reach. If this album is anything to go by then Haven are going to be huge this time next year. Already darlings of the NME and Jo Whiley on Radio 1, Haven already have a huge fan base in Manchester. That is set to spread nationwide thanks to this album. It has Squire-esque chiming guitars, a tight rhythm section and the vocals of lead singer, Gary Briggs, can take your breath away on tracks such as Let It Live. They've got the look, ...

A mix of jangly guitars and vocal harmonies, Haven have been likened to Starsailor, Coldplay and The Stone Roses. The single 'Say Something' is also included.
