Classical voices to relax and uplift

Advantages: Good background listening
Disadvantages: Odd mixture of music on the Uplifting disc

.... Again it is too operatic for my tastes and I find it very irritating. 12 Puccini - 'Un Bel Di' from the opera Madame Butterfly. Renee Fleming sings this aria. While I love her voice this is a piece which I have heard too often and it does nothing for me. I don't find it uplifting and I would probably skip the track. 13 Lara - 'Granada'. This is sung by Jose Carreras. Another famoud song which you would probably recognise. When I was a child it was used for an advert for Granada television. An Ok track, but for me it's nothing special. 14 Parry - 'I Was Glad'. This is one I really like. It's also know as the Coronation Anthem and is sung here by the choir of King's College, Cambridge. This definitely qualifies as uplifting in my book, though Parry is perhaps better know for his other stirring composition, Jerusalem... Read review

Bygone Class

Advantages: Classic recordings from a master of his trade.
Disadvantages: Mono recordings, Crackly in parts.

...imagine it could be bought much more cheaper if you shop around. It has 2 CD's with around 41 tracks and gives more than 21/2 hours listening pleasure. It is recorded in Mono which I know is a totally alien concept for today's music lovers. The sepia photograph of Caruso on the front cover has him looking like a gangster from the Untouchables time period and the list of Italian composers could certainly be a Mafia list. The Cloak

Advantages: Rich baritone performance, superb orchestration
Disadvantages: Dark and menacing

The Composer Giacomo Puccini was born in Lucca, Italy in 1858 to a family of church musicians. He studied musical composition. He enters a one-act opera competition with Le Villi. Although he was unsuccessful it was heard by Verdi's publisher, Ricordi, who commissioned an opera from Puccini. His first opera, Edgar, appeared in 1889, was a failure however Puccini's next opera, La bohème in 1896, was to become probably his most popular opera. The Libretto The librettist, Giuseppe Adami, took his subject from a one-act play, La Houppelande (The Cloak) by the French writer Didier Gold.
