Compiled by UK hip-hop producer Mark B (of Mark B&Blade fame) from rare grooves discovered ... more
during a New York vinyl shopping excursion,Harlem Worldis the authentic sound of the birth of hip-hop. Spanning the years 1979-81, just after hip-hop made the transition from homemade mix-tapes to limited vinyl runs on small New York independent labels, these breaks and rhymes are as old as old-skool gets. It's primitive and, by comparison to today's rap, incredibly innocent stuff. Most tracks are essentially 70s disco with MC's saying anything that rhymes, most following the: "school's good", "I'm a rapper", "I love rap", "I love New York", "I love girls" and "girls love me, because I'm a rapper" example of the Sugar Hill Gang's "Rappers Delight" (not included here as it's anything but rare). Rudimentary as it may all seem now, there's something strangely refreshing in the lack of expletives, the daftness of the Mr Magic's kazoo riff on "2001 Kazoos" and the block-party funk of Kurtis Blow's "Do the Do". And above all else, the grooves and unadulterated fun that run through out, are completely infectious. --Dan Gennoe

Advantages: Great Location, Clean and Friendly Staff Disadvantages: Views from hotel itself not great, no free wi fi
My boyfriend turned 30 a few weeks ago and for his present I booked us a trip to NewYork and the Wellington Hotel is where I picked for us to stay due to its central location in Manhattan.
Last Wednesday we flew out to NYC and checked into the Wellington.
If you didn't know already this is where part of the Borat film was made, the main scene being where he tries to unpack his things in the lift thinking its his room and so many Borat jokes ensued in the elevators during our stay.
The location of the hotel is amazing, its a 1 minute walk from Carnegie Hall, 2 minutes from Central Park and 5 minutes from Times Square and is located on the corner of 55th Street and 7th Avenue. The placement of the hotel was my favourite thing about it as it was just so easy to walk to some of the city's best attractions from here.
When we checked in ...
Advantages: Brilliant location, modern, big room, huge TV, one of the cheapest hotels Disadvantages: Breakfast is expensive, toilet blocked a couple of times, not enough lifts
had in a hotel. They had some great TV channels including news, sports, a lot of Spanish channels(?) and the best channel which showed comedy stuff like The King of Queens and Judge Judy. We also had a small table and a couple of chairs, a big desk, a phone and a digital alarm clock. The bathroom was very clean and they provided good bath products and lotions.
My husband used the gym a few times which he said was good.
I looked at all the hotel's in this area that had a good location and this was one of the cheapest ones. Although still, admittedly, very expensive, prices are good for a central NewYork hotel. We paid $1,400 for the week but this wasn't including breakfast (I wouldn't book breakfast here as it's pretty pricey at about £18 a day). At the time I booked it, in August 08, the exchange rate made it about £800. However ...
Advantages: A lot to see & do, has something to offer for everyone Disadvantages: Too much to see and do, can be exhausting, expensive hotels
and saw kids playing.
American museum of Natural history - past meets future
We walked through Central Park and got to the American museum of Natural history. The building façade is huge and impressive and it is easy to see that this is a building with tradition and history. The lobby is also impressive with two big dinosaur skeletons right in the middle. We already had tickets for the museum through the NewYorkCityPass but we had to pay extra to get into the Hayden Planetarium. I think that we had to pay 12$ per person for that.
We started out optimistic strolling slowly through the section of Asian mammals and hall of Asian people. I think we soon realized that this museum was HUGE :-). So we had to increase the pace a little bit if we were to cover it all in a day. You need to plan your visit if you go there because it is more ...
