...it actually is. ‘The Big Come Up’ sounds like a genuine LP from the days when blues was virtually mainstream. Starting with a heavy blues number ‘Busted’ the album gets off to a great start. With a sound that echoes songs written by Delta Bluesman Son House, ‘Busted’ is a celebration of everything that is great about the blues. An infectious guitar riff hangs in the air as Carney thrashes out a toe tapping rhythm on his ’broke beat’ drum kit. Just ... ...After listening to ‘The Big Come Up’ I couldn’t help but think that an opportunity for a great album had been wasted. For a record that promised so much at the outset, it really disappointed towards the end as the same repetitive beats were served up again and again. The Black Keys are really good at what they do. They combine rock and blues effortlessly and the album does have some really good songs. As a whole however, the album just does not work. ...
