Advantages: Excellent backing tracks, competent vocals, a couple of strong pop hits Disadvantages: Not much in the way of soul, some dull tracks, all rather dated now
mind that in 1972 "The Black & White Minstrel Show" was still one of the top rated TV shows, which tells you something about the era.
The Pearls were signed to the Bell label ? which had some hugely popular acts on their roster including the Bay City Rollers, Barry Blue, David Cassidy and Gary Glitter. The UK arm of the label focused mainly on commercial pop and the Pearls fitted into this perfectly. Interestingly the US arm tended to focus more on soul music.
A String of Pearls
Going back to my dad?s old Sanyo radio cassette recorder there was a song which was oft played by myself back in 1974 called ?Guilty?. Performed by the Pearls I loved it and have vague recollections of a Top of the Pops performance which incorporated judges? wigs. I have hunted high and low for this clip on the internet and sadly can only conclude it was ...
Advantages: Instrumentally And Lyrically Sublime Disadvantages: None, Unless You're Not A Fan
For America, 1968 was one of the most turbulent times witnessed since the finish of the World War II, with counterculture growing in force and size, leading the charge against any form of authority or leadership. And it was rock music that was given the charge of railing against the forces, becoming almost another form of protest music, but with psychedelia instead of folk. And then in the same year as Electric Ladyland and The Beatles, comes Music From Big Pink, an album built around roots/folk-rock that was completely against the grain.
For a group that had previously been the backing band for Bob Dylan's infamous 1966 world tour that shocked its audience with its use rock backing for someone who was previously seen as the cover boy for folk music, this was not the expected route. But ultimately the album went on to inspire ...
Advantages: New and different, multiplayer, drums Disadvantages: can be embaressing, no online band world tour
Rock Band is a step in the right direction for any musical gamer. Obviously a move onwards from the Guitar Hero franchise with the inclusion of a drum kit and a microphone. The guitar is practically the same as any of the guitar hero guitars, but with a few tweaks such as the solo buttons which are very difficult to use and aren't really needed. Therefore the guitar isn't really a must have if you already have a guitar hero guitar. However if you don't then get the whole band set as the variety offered by having so many instruments is endless and playing with friends or online is one of the best things about the game. The solo careers are good too with a good tracklist which ranges dramatically and also new downloadable tracks every week in case you get bored of the same tunes over and over again.
The guitar on expert is easier than ...
The Wire (12/00, p.38) - "...Part bricolage, part borrowing, part theft....this is highly sophisticated music, which nods as much to Dylan Thomas and Flann O'Brien as Robbie Burns or Jeannie Robertson..."
Album Notes
2 LPs on 2 CDs: WEE TAM (1968)/THE BIG HUGE (1968). The Incredible Sring Band includes: Robin Williamson, Mike Heron. Originally released as two separate albums in 1968, WEE TAM & THE BIG HUGE were audacious then and monumental now. These were, in effect, the Incredible String Band's fourth and fifth albums; their debut appeared just two years prior. The band expanded their base with more stringed instruments from around the world, and increased the song length. More than half the songs are over five minutes in length to accommodate the band's exploration of folkish moods and mysticism. Mike Heron's "Log Cabin In The Sky" is a classic by any measure, and Robin Williamson's "The Half-Remarkable Question" shows him in full command of a deeply anchored musical sensibility. The whole set feels like a continuous piece, with the songs rolling into one another with graceful ease.
