First of all, what a great film! In my opinion, the greatest comedy of all time! Stands up to repeat viewings due to a great script, funny sight gags and a brilliant soundtrack.

The songs contained on this soundtrack are all directly lifted from the movie, unlike certain soundtracks (music from and inspired by what exactly?). The inclusion of the Logjammin' theme music is genius, and the Spanish version of Hotel California by the Gipsy ... ...who uses it as his intro music. Apart from one or two weird atmospheric tracks that you will struggle to place in the film, the rock songs are cracking. Those listeners who believe in herbal remedies as much as the dude himself will drift in and out when they hear some of the gems contained here.

The songs contained on this soundtrack are all directly lifted from the movie, unlike certain soundtracks (music from and inspired by what exactly?). The inclusion of the Logjammin' theme music is genius, and the Spanish version of Hotel California by the Gipsy Kings cannot fail to remind of the creepy lilac-clad paedophile who uses it as his intro music. Apart from one or two weird atmospheric tracks that you will struggle to place in the film, the rock songs are cracking. Those listeners who believe in herbal remedies as much as the dude himself will drift in and out when they hear some of the gems contained here.
Like i said, there are some glaring omissions. Most notably, the Creedence Clearwater Revival tracks are nowhere to be found. Maybe they couldnt secure the license for them, but it would have rounded off the album nicely.
Ending with Townes Van Zandt "Dead Flowers", this album really does have it all, heart-pulling country, smooth grooves (Logjammin') and rock classics (those Gipsy Kings).
Highyl recommended, not just to fans of the film (otherwise known as people who have seen it!) but for anyone who likes their music.

Album Notes
Compilation producers: T Bone Burnett, Joel Coen, Ethan Coen. Engineers include: Roger Moutenot. Now THIS is a soundtrack! No grunge bands covering cheesy '70s hits, no retro chic, no rap-techno-country-opera superstar crossovers, just an eclectic selection of tunes by some quality performers. You get obscure tracks from Dylan and Captain Beefheart, some sublime vocalizing from Yma Sumac and Nina Simone, and cuts from world-class artists like Moondog and Meredith Monk, whose creativity exceeds their popularity. The film music quota is covered by a slice of Mancini ("Lujon") and the perversity quota filled by the Gipsy Kings' version of "Hotel California." Did we mention the previously unreleased Elvis Costello cut and the Stones cover from late great Texas songwriting legend Townes Van Zandt?
Album Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (2/20-2/27/98, p.116) - "The Coen brothers' FARGO follow-up may be set in a bowling alley, but don't expect to hear this soundtrack album's bizarre mix of songs at your local rock'n'bowl. Oddities include obscure Bob Dylan and Captain Beefheart songs...operan, avant-classical, and lounge tracks..." - Rating: B
