Aerosmith are a band with a history, a lot of history. They have recorded some simply fantastic tunes but, as is /always/ the case there are some songs which are better and there are some songs which are not so good.
A few years ago I was given some Our Price vouchers, and found myself thinking. o O (Great! That should reduce the cost of the CD down to the sort of levels I could buy it from Virgin at). I was right, £16 for Aerosmith’s Big Ones. The thing is, though; I would probably have paid twice or even thrice that if there were no other way to get hold of this compilation album.
Yes, this is a collection of Aerosmith’s best hits - at the time of this release, that is - and so some people whine about the originality of the lyrics and yet another moneymaking scheme. I don’t think that that gripe is entirely justified in this case though. The fact is that Aerosmith have an awful lot of albums in their back catalogue and they have covered all sorts of sounds in those albums. I was pleased, very pleased, when I was given the chance to pick this up because it means that I could be mercenary myself and not bother to buy back through their collection.
The other reason why I was so very pleased with this purchase was that the music stamped into this CD is absolutely awesome! I’ve seen reviews here on Ciao where the entire text was something like “Ace album!” repeated 45 times (until, that is, Abuse@Ciao caught them and punted their account off to the cybervoid) and I feel that even if I had tried such a review I probably would still have failed to stress just what an ace album this really is!
“Big Ones” brings you a mix of Aerosmith sounds, but, and this is the important bit, offers them up to you in such away that you’ll not find the clash of tunes annoying. I think trying to describe each and every track on the CD would be slightly spamy so I’ll just list them. “Walk on Water”, “Love in an Elevator”, “Rag Doll”, “What it Takes”, “Dude (looks like a lady)”, “Janie’s Got a Gun”, “Cryin’”, “Amazing”, “Blind Man”, “Deuces are Wild”, “The Other Side”, “Crazy”, “Eat the Rich”, “Angel”, “Livin’ on the Edge” and a live version of “Dude (looks like a lady)”.
I think my very favourite Aerosmith tune has to be the awfully sad and disturbing “Janie’s Got a Gun” but, after that, in my order of favourites I’d have to put “Pink” and so it’s slightly disappointing that that’s missing from the line up. However, “Pink” wasn’t a success for Aerosmith until after Big Ones was released and so it’s a little unfair of me to take them to task for that oversight!

I'm not a great fan of Aerosmith, but you have the gift of the gab, i've no doubt you could sell ice to eskimo's if you tried :P Maybe i'll borrow the album from my bro-in-law and give it another try!
