Title: Big Ones
Released: November, 1994
Label: Geffen Records
Album Type: Compilation Album
Produced by: Bruce Fairbairn, Michael Beinhorn

The tracks on this album span from the late 80's and the early 90's era of Aerosmith's career. As usual, I am marking songs to how they sound as they are, not to if they live up to Aerosmith songs from the start of their career.

Now, to begin with, this album has many tracks on it, which are on the "Young Lust Anthology" album. Now, that didn't bother me to much, as I collect the albums anyway, however if you buy them for the different songs, you may not want to buy this if you already have the Young Lust anthology. However, there are two tracks that are not actually on the Young Lust album.

These two tracks being: Amazing and Livin' On The Edge. I say not actually on the Young Lust album as these tracks on this album are the originals and not acoustic/ orchestral versions.

Inside this nicely packaged album you will find the following track list:

Walk On Water (PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED): Duration: 4:57
Wreitten by: Tyler/Perry/Blades/Shaw

A great start to the album! This previously unreleased track starts with hard guitar and bass, which runs through out the track. One of my favourite songs also. A great chorus and great guitar playing. The lyrics to the song don't make much sense, and most of it just consists of random words such as "nose bleed" "Skull cap" "fast car" This was actually later released as a single.

Love In An Elevator : Duration: 5:22
Written by: Tyler//Perry
Originally from: PUMP album

One of the more famous Aerosmith songs. Lyrics go from one to the next with no problem at all. A great song to listen to if you are feeling low.A great guitar solo included in this track which starts around 1:27 untill about 2:03 "Lovin it up when I'm going down!" The song was inspired by an incident that happened to Steven. He was caught in an elevator with a women!

Rag Doll: Duration:
Written by: Tyler/Vallance/Perry/Knight
Originally from: Permanent Vacation album

Starting off with an heavy beat, joined by some guitar. The song speaks of New Orleans and it's hookers. This song has trumpets present that help enhance the sleazy feel to this song on the chorus. The lyrics are not really too explicit

What It Takes: Duration 5:10
Written by: Tyer/Perry/Child
Originally from: PUMP Album

A moving song begining with some nice drums and a sad sounding guitar. Slow paced but lifts up accordingly with Tyler's singing. "You spent me up like a money, then you hung me out to dry, it was easy to keep all your lies in disguise, cause you had me in deep with the devil in your eye! - Tell me what it takes to let you go!" This power ballard ends the album 'Pump'.

Dude - Looks Like A Lady: Duration: 4:23
Written by: Tyler/Perry/Child
Originally from: Permanent Vaction

Starts with a guitar kicking up, the some bass, which keeps cutting off every few seconds, untill it finally cranks up. A well known song, and very energetic. A few cleverly disguised sexual references in the song. A grea rocking tune. Tyler's yowling towards the end of the song is great.

Janie's Got A Gun: Duration:5:29
Written by: Tyler/ Hamilton
Originally on the PUMP album.

Janie's Got A Gun: Spooky begining. One of the highlights of the album. Starts quite mellow along side gun shot sounds, then gets more upbeat, along an orchestral kind of backing, as well as with a piano. Full of so many different intruments and it all fits perfect - it's great! This track includes a great jangly guitar. "She had to take him down easy! And put a bullet in his brain! She said cause nobody believes me, the man is such a sleaze!". The music sounds like Hitchcock's psycho for a brief period during the song. Tyler admits that this song was one of his hardest songs to write.

Cryin': Duration: 5:07
Written by: Tyler/Perry/Rhodes
Originally from Get A Grip

This track begins with some heavy bass and guitar, which then mellows for a short period while Tyler starts off the sining. Great lyrics and a great chorus. One of the best parts of this song being: "If our, love goes up, in flames, it's a fire, I can't resist!". Which eventually leads on to the fantastic chorus.

Amazing: Duration: 5:55
Written by: Tyler/Supa
Album originally from: Get A Grip

I am a great fan of this orignal version of the song. Slow tempo, great lyrics orchestral backing (towards the end of the song on this version). One of the high points of the album in my opinion. Great song based around the singing at the start and about half way through alternates and bases its self around the guitar playing, with Tyler's shouts and screams. The song lives up to it's name: Amazing.

Blind Man: Duration: 3:57
Written by: Tyler/Perry Rhodes
Originally unreleased.

A few people I know of aren't really in to this song. However I personally think it is a great song. Starts off slow and then kicks up in to a chorus with nice guitar slams and great singing from Tyler. The second chorus is where this song mainly picks up.

Blind Man was released in November, 1994 as a single. Peak chart position: #48

Deuces Are Wild:
Written by: Tyler/ Vallance
Originally from: Beavis and Butt Head Experience

Starting off with a soft jangly guitar, Tyler doing some soft yowling. The guitar lifts slightly and so does the bass. A nice steady song, with a great solid chorus which anyone can sing alone too. This also is one of the high points of the album. Some nice "pan pipe" sounding effects in the background. It always cheers me up. "Like deja vu I feel like I've been here..."

The Other Side: Duration:
Written by: Tyler/Vallance
Originally from: PUMP

A great song with a nice pace and lyrics. Bass plays a large role in this song. This track is continuing to grow on me. It is a very jazzy driven track. Vallance was shocked when Steven decided to use the parts he intended as the verse for the chorus - but soon learned to like the idea.

Crazy: Duration 5:14
Written by: Ty;er/ Perry/ Child
Originally from: Get A Grip

Starting off with some drum beats and harmonica, along side Tyler talking the lyrics. The harmonica and bass, accompanied by the jangly guitars in the background - especially on the chorus - make this a great song. Nice soft tempo, and often gets replayed over and over again by me. Not to be missed!

Eat The Rich: Duration: 4:09
Written by: Tyler/Perry/Vallance
Originally from: Get A Grip

Starting off with a kind of tribal kind of drum beat, and eventually turning in to a lively, fast paced rock song. Great lyrics on this song, and it is one of my favourites on this disc (Yes Another!). The guitar and bass accompanied by Tyler's vocals on the chorus make this song great. Another of my favourite lines from the song: "Cause I'm sick of your complaining, about your poodles and your pills!"

Angel: Duration: 5:04
Written by: Tyler/ Child
Originally from Permanent Vaction

A power ballard. You have to be in the right mood for it.It sounds more like "pop" than rock.Started off by a loud guitar, which fades in to some soft music, as Tyler sings the great lyrics. It then cranks back up again for the chorus, which includes a kind of orchestral effect. A great song instrumentally, although the lyrics are quite cheesey now days. Steven Tyler claims that it is a song that makes him sad -it is just over played.

Livin' On The Edge:
Written by: Tyler/Perry/Hudson
Originally from: Get A Grip

I prefer this original version over the acoustic version. With an Eastern style of music backing it is a nice relaxed song. Generally just a nice song. Has a nice chorus. It is a track about racism.

The live version of Dude Looks Like A Lady is also very cool, but it isn't as good as the studio version that was placed earlier in the track.

The material from Aerosmith's first Geffen release, Done With Mirrors is noticeably absent.
This album is good for the casual fan who prefers the "new" Aerosmith over the old; who doesn't want to have to wade through dozens of songs they don't recognize to get to the songs that they know.

Still don't think that this is my kind of music - blatantly yours though, and you're very good at reviewing it. Lora x
