Advantages: Rocks the Ass Of Everything Else Disadvantages: Painfull Listening for 99% of People
...as great as "BigSexyLand" and "Beers, Steers and Queers"? The expectations are high as the list of collaborators joining Al Jorgensen on this album is quite simply stunning….. You have Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers), Jello Biarfa (Dead Kennedys, Lard, Tumor Circus), Phildo Owen (Skatenigs), and rather perversely Rick Nelson (Cheap Trick) and Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top). That number of illustrious names can either mean total brilliance, or the worst kind of mutual admiration festival possible.
Right from the start of the album with Fire Engine co-written by Iggy Pop we are given what we expect, which is massive drum beats, layer upon layer of guitars, distorted vocals that you probably do not want to delve into that much. This is a much looser affair than Ministry and you can just imagine driving through the appellations in a pick up truck...

The two videos for Aces High and 2 minuites were the only single releases ffrom the albulm and enjoyed a moderate amount of success. The stand out tracks on the album were the epic explosive title track Powerslave wich was based on an ancient Eygiptian leader overseeing his slaves as they began to show sighns of revolt, and the other was Rime of the ancient mariner (Based on the popular poem by Samuel Taylor Coloridge) wich lasts for an impressive 13 and a half minuites. I got this for Christmas... Review ofOne Way Ticket To Hell... And Back (Parental Advisory) [PA] - Darkness (The)by
icklekitty
Advantages: less pompus Disadvantages: some silly songs
...I got this for Christmas so I thought I'd review it: -
The Darkness are loved and loathed in equal measure and the release of their second album probably won't convince many of their critics to give them a second chance. But it should.
Firstly, it's produced by Roy Thomas Baker of Queen fame, so you already know it's going to sound big and bombastic. Many people thought "Permission to Land" was too pompous and over-blown but it's like a stripped-down, simplistic Garage Rock album compared to "One Way Ticket..."! Example? Ok, the opening title track begins with, wait for it... A PAN PIPE SOLO!!!!! The album also features plenty of strings throughout to add to the bombast (bit like Nightwish in places), Lynyrd Skynyrd-style honky-tonk piano (on "Knockers") and I think I heard a few sitars, for crying out loud!
Another key point...
