Album Notes: The first studio album since the death of saxophonist LeRoi Moore, BIG WHISKEY AND THE GROOGRUX KING finds the Dave Matthews Band none the worse for wear and collaborating with superstar producer Rob Cavallo (best known for his extensive work with Green Day). Cavallo's way with an aggressive riff is in evidence on "Shake Me Like a Monkey," a funky track vaguely reminiscent of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer," and the driving "Why I Am," which recalls the Knack's "My Sharona." Other songs, such as the groovy, polyrhythmic "Spaceman," find the band returning to classic jammy, chops-a-riffic DMB territory. Full of prominent hooks and snap-tight ensemble playing, BIG WHISKEY gave DMB fans another reason to rejoice.
Advantages: Instrumentally And Lyrically Sublime Disadvantages: None, Unless You're Not A Fan
...For America, 1968 was one of the most turbulent times witnessed since the finish of the World War II, with counterculture growing in force and size, leading the charge against any form of authority or leadership. And it was rock music that was given the charge of railing against the forces, becoming almost another form of protest music, but with psychedelia instead of folk. And then in the same year as Electric Ladyland and The Beatles, comes Music From Big Pink, an album built around roots/folk-rock that was completely against the grain.
For a group that had previously been the backing band for Bob Dylan's infamous 1966 world tour that shocked its audience with its use rock backing for someone who was previously seen as the cover boy for folk music, this was not the expected route. But ultimately the album went on to inspire...

Advantages: Rarity value and a great rendition of All Along the Watchtower Disadvantages: Availability can be a problem, as is price!
...Recently, released in 1994, is a five track EP from the DaveMatthewsBand. This was essentially a "filler" before the release of their first studio album "Under the Table and Dreaming".
The songs on this album have been incorporated onto later studio albums, with the exception of "All Along the Watchtower" which has only appeared on their live CD's
In tone, this shows a change from "Remember Two Things" with the inclusion of an acoustic version of Dancing Nancies, which shows off Dave M and Tim Reynold's guitar skills, which are considerable. This EP is a good taster of the DMB's sound, an eclectic blend of musical styles which includes the Flamenco feel to Dancing Nancies. They are not afraid to experiment, trying different sounds to avoid becoming pigeon-holed in a sort of "alternative" music slot.
To the uninitiated, Dave...

Advantages: Full of entertaining shows... Disadvantages: ...full of repeats
...Of course, it's the wonderful 'Dave'...the artist formerly known as UKTV G2. Not exactly the most exciting of sounding television channels, so they glamourised it...by called it 'Dave'...because everyone knows a Dave.
The concept of the channel is simply a station airing predominantly repeats of entertainment and comedy shows. It doesn't air 24-hours a day, instead it tends to broadcast until approximately 3am each night, and then restarts at 7am, with a bit of mind-boggling Teleshopping thrown in there for good measure.
But what does it show? Well during the day it plays repeats of entertainment shows such as Top Gear, Ray Mear's Extreme Survival, Trawlermen, Traffic Cops and Fifth Gear; all seemingly quite 'manly' shows aimed at blokes called 'Dave' presumably...
As the day's schedule moves on it tends to focus...
