Additional notes
Album Notes: 2 LPs on 1 CD: BIRTHDAY BLUES (1968)/ROSEMARY LANE (1971). This 24-song CD combines 1967's BIRTHDAY BLUES and 1971's ROSEMARY LANE, two of guitarist Bert Jansch's best-loved albums. It is a perfect introduction to one of British folk's leading lights. BIRTHDAY BLUES finds Jansch in a cheerful mood, accompanied by fellow Pentangle band-mates bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox. The remarkably titled "Come Sing Me A Happy Song To Prove We Can All Get Along The Lumpy, Bumpy, Long And Dusty Road" and the sweetly adoring "Miss Heather Rosemary Sewell," a touching love song to Jansch's new wife are among his finest moments. ROSEMARY LANE is even better. Jansch works with a broader emotional palette, while recordings of the traditional "Rosemary Lane," "Reynardine," and "Sylvie" return to the guitarist's folk roots. The album also includes a respectful adaptation of Robert Johnson's "Alman." While all of ROSEMARY LANE is divine, two Jansch originals, "Tell Me What Is True Love?" and "M'Lady Nancy," are clearly the highlights.
