sex-metal, Cradle of Filth have remorselessly closed in on million-selling status, and now approach their first major label release. In the meantime, there is Bitter Suites to Succubi, intended as a stop-gap and, presumably, as an accompaniment to Alex Chandon's soon-to-be-released movie Cradle of Fear, featuring the band themselves. The album includes six new tracks, plus a cover of the Sisters of Mercy's classic "No Time to Cry", and three tracks taken from COF's aggressive but scrappy The Principle of Evil Made Flesh album, here (thankfully) re-recorded. The formula remains fairly stable throughout--a doomy classical opening is suddenly overwhelmed by an insanely fast riff and drums that have you thinking several helicopters are landing close by. As ever, Dani Filth's vocal rises from a bowel-deep grunt to a piercing shriek, the two voices often tracked to howl out in ear-splitting tandem. The album will win few new converts, and will surely have Sisters fans grinding their teeth in annoyance at a risibly weak "No Time to Cry". But Cradle of Filth's legions of followers will appreciate this fresh dose of unpleasantness, and look forward to the band's first big-budget production. Hopefully, that will be genuinely monstrous. --Dominic Wills
Album Notes: Cradle Of Filth includes: Dani Filth (vocals); Paul Allender (guitar); Adrian, Gian, Martin Foul, Robin Graves.
Album Reviews: CMJ (7/16/01, p.16) - "...Another side of black metal beef to sink your vampire teeth into...featuring re-recordings of classic Cradle cuts...Haunting female vocals, razor sharp riffs and utterly eerie keyboards pepper the new tunes. It's literally vintage Cradle."
Advantages: Amazing musical talent Disadvantages: Music style is not everyone's cup of tea
...Wow. That's the only word I can use to describe this album. For those of you who have heard the album "Bitte Suites to Succubi", this album is second only to that. On this album, Cradle produce an amazing sound that creates a sense of power, striking a certain fear into ones heart. Dani's vocal talents are as amazing as ever, as is the drumming. I have owned this album for about a year now, and I still listen to it on a regular basis. Although Cradle are not my favourite band (since the release of their latest album, "Damnation and a Day"), I would recommend this album to anyone. It is an absolute must have for any metal fan....

Advantages: For fans of: NIN, Mariyn Manson, Refused, American Headharge, Disadvantages: Not for fans of mainstream pop music!
...For a debut album this has been described as "NIN on Cider" by Alex Chandon (director of Cradle of Fear & other Cradle of Filth videos) and I think that kind of sums it up for me.
It's an album that is hard to describe, with it's superb mix of electronics and innovative guitar styles, each song is different in its own way. Tracks like "Glutton" and "My Beautiful Hate" offer sublime lyrical content that molds itself around a wonder of rebellious industrial music. The guitar riff on "Devil in Your Eyes" takes the album somewhere else and sends me to another place - it completely contradicts the electronic beats but goes so well that when the track ends you just want to play it again! The title track "Bully" to me is the weakest track due to the lack of lyrical content but it has certain addictive quality in the beats and I can...

Advantages: Presentation, Good balance of beauty and menace Disadvantages: Occasional lack of originality
...Having first heard of these Taiwan Black Metallers in the pages of Terrorizer magazine i decided to check the album out! It does not disappoint - Brutal metal riffing combined with luscious synths and strings and some very impressive gutteral vocals counter balanced with some melodic female passages!
The production is good throughout without ever being saccharine. Ideas flow thick and fast without overstaying their welcome and although sometimes lacking in originality there is good enough scope and variety to keep listening!
The artwork really captures the mood of the music and is impeccibaly designed and laid out!
The only real down side to this otherwise impressive release is the aforementioned lack of originality that occasionally creeps in!
One for fans of Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth etc...
