Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (8/10/95, p.59) - 3.5 Stars out of 5 - Good - "...This self-produced album is not one long throbbing dance marathon; the group's unifying vision of emotive pop music pulls together a collection of actual songs. They're all emboldened by Heather Small's lustrous contralto, catchy melodies and a house-music undertow..."

Advantages: interesting lyrics, punchy titles, strong emotions Disadvantages: i don't think there are any!
...When I first heard 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not ' I was a bit sceptical. I thought it was just a bunch of words put to a tune, or another band like 'the streets' or something, but actually, after listening to it a couple of times I started to really enjoy the songs, especially the song 'mardy bum', 'dancing shoes' and 'view from the afternoon'.
True, I'm not sure what a few of them are about, but I like the songs even if I am not sure of how deep their meaning is.
For example, my friend says 'when the sun goes down' is not about a prostitute or anything, it has a much deeper meaning, but I really enjoy the song thinking it is about exactly that!

Advantages: A great debut album Disadvantages: Disadvantages?!
...A phenomenon or a fad? Love them or hate them? Regardless of what you think of the Arctic Monkeys, credit must be given through what they've achieved in such a short time. Personally, I'm all for them - witty lyrics and catchy rhythms make them people-friendly.
Just over a year ago I heard about the 'buzz' regarding a track called "Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" that was circulating at the speed of light through the Internet. They playing Reading and Leeds festival in 2005 on the Carling stage, the smallest stage at the festival, and although I didn't watch them, just passing the tent when they were on showed at least crowds of 12 to 15 rows deep outside the tent, something that was completely unheard of for the Carling stage. At the time, they had no record label, and no single had been released. Exactly one year on, they were...

Advantages: Good mixture of songs, beautiful voice Disadvantages: Some songs are a bit dull.
...Automatic for the people by REM has got to be, by far, their best album. I was created in the early 90s, but don't let that put you off. Their style is original and Michael Stipe's voice is amazing.

-----
This song starts with a guitar solo, which is joined by Michael after four bars. The guitar plays a big part on all of REM's music. The verses are quite mellow, and slowish. The drum beat comes in half way through the verse, but it isn't a constant beat. In the chorus, the drums, guitars and violins really make the song sound full. Also, the electric guitar comes in (the first guitar is also electric but I think it's probably an electro-accoustic.) This song is quite a good track to start the album with, because it is quite mellow, but is stronger in parts. It's quite a good guide of what REM are like but it can be a bit...
