'A Black and White Night' was partly a tribute, partly a celebration of The Big O's long-overdue return to music in a big way in 1987, recorded little more than a year before his untimely death. Watching the video on TV brought a lump to my throat, even before and after he passed away; it was amazing to see such an array of stars, from Bonnie Raitt and k.d. lang to Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen, all on one stage, checking their egos at the door, to back that tremendous voice on these songs. Most of the repertoire was drawn from Roy's golden age, but the songs didn't sound dated; on the contrary, they are so timeless and it is good to hear them updated like this. One listen to "In Dreams", "Only the Lonely", "Crying", "Mean Woman Blues", and "Ooby Dooby" ought to be more than enough to convince you. There are a couple of newer songs that were to appear on the posthumous 'Mystery Girl' album, the sublime "All I Can Do Is Dream You" and the eerie "The Comedians". Best of all, though, is an extended version of the utterly timeless "Oh Pretty Woman", with a fairly long instrumental section that might have sounded grossly self-indulgent in lesser hands, but in this context it fits like a glove. If you never were a fan of Roy, this really ought to sway you. If you always were, this is indispensable.
