Album Notes: BLACK CAT is a 12-song collection form jazz musician Jimmy Smith that features studio and live tracks recorded in 1991 and 2001. Noted flautist Nestor Torres and guitarist Phil Upchurch are among the musicians who make guest appearances on BLACK CAT.
Advantages: includes old classics many will and should know Disadvantages: not really any.just a bit more originality i suppose
...well i am an avid led zeppelin fan so thought this might be worth checin out. i haven't reall y ever heard much of the black crowes. but i must say the seem a talented bunch. they are however it appears to be doing covers of led zeppelin wille dixon and others. it is like all blues mainky improvised so dont expect copies ppl. the songs are a refreshing change. not that they are necessarily better they are just different and the singer well lets be fair who can copy robert plant exactly. mind he is good though. also critics i think you should bear in mind it is a live album. i personally recommend to all blues/rock type fans who like things like zeppelin. at the age of 17 i really enjoy so the older more cultured ppl should really like it....

Advantages: Big hit singles Disadvantages: A few average tracks
...by is something I can relate to (though I'm not so old I can remember trams!). Apparently Jimmy was a bit hesistant about using the line "that was when coal was king" in case people thought he meant footballer Andy Cole! I'm sure nobody did though especially as Jimmy's throaty voice almost wails "this was a big river, I want you all to know". A beautiful wistful ballad.
I'm a bit disappointed that "Laura" and "Beautiful" aren't on this album. The only other big hit single that seems to here is "Calling Out Your Name" which again, is a country-tinged track. It's much more "rocky" than the previous country ballads though.
"Absent Friends" contains the brilliant Gary Moore on guitar and "Black And White" features reggae artiste Rankin' Roger. Like most good artistes, Jimmy likes to span different genres.
Here is the full track listing...

Advantages: A Toe-tapping burst of song! Disadvantages: You should see the film or show first.
..., musicians, the story of the show, and plenty of pictures, in colour and black and white, from the stage performance. A very useful guide to the muscial!
The CD has all of the music from the show and if you are familiar with the film or stage performance, then you be able to put the songs into their rightful context.
The main cast are not familiar to us here in the U.K. but they include:-
Sutton Foster as Millie Dillmount
Gavin Creel as JimmySmith
Harriet Harris as Mrs Mears
Angela Christian as Miss Dorothy Brown
and Marc Kudisch as Mr Trevor Graydon.
There are about 30 other supporting members of the main cast and about 25 more in the Ensemble cast. So there are plenty of voices to accompany the music supplied by the orchestra, directed by Michael Rafter.
It is a well-rounded orchestra, playing instruments including woodwinds...
