Album Reviews: Option (1-2/97, p.94) - \"...some of the best alternative country I've heard....100% acoustic and spine-tingling gorgeous, BLANKET WARM covers the listener with heartbreak and lip-biting confession...\"
Advantages: Fantastic fourth album, no loss in strength Disadvantages: Takes a while to get into
...that it actually fits, this is what You got A Killer Scene There, Man... and Long Slow Goodbye have been bringing you towards. This is never going to be a song that you love in its own right, but in the context of the rest of the album, it works well.
The second bonus track is "Precious And Grace", which seems to be a bit of an encore for the usual QOTSA sound, a little like a "Thank you and good night" type track. There aren't any details of the line-up for this track, but it sounds like Lanegan is back on the vocals, which is fitting seeing as he was on the first track too. There's a great bit around a third of the way through where you just get a clean pounding guitar sound before the main solo of the track, which is long and hugely enjoyable. The album ends on an all important high note.
So should you buy Lullabies to Paralyse? Well it's clear...

Advantages: Catchy in places, yet far more experimental than Songs For The Deaf Disadvantages: Those who only like Songs For The Deaf may find this too adventurous
...Joshe Homme is a druggie. Everyone knows this, but its never been so musically clear that he was high until now. He definately took an extra puff for this one, which can only be a good thing....
Queens Of The Stone Age have built up a huge following in recent years mostly due to their smash hit album Songs For The Deaf. It was a rockers dream. Heavy distortion and rock and roll riffs all laced together with catchy, radio friendly song structuring. And, truth be told, it deserved all the credit it recieved. It definately was the all in one 'rock record'. But thats exactly what Queens Of The Stone Age do, they make a record that has an overall sound, and overall feel, and an overall theme. Songs For The Deaf was the rock record, so what is their fourth full-length album Lullabies To Paralize? Well, this time round its not quite...

Advantages: Lots of good songs Disadvantages: It has a weak ending
...They brought you the amaizing "no one knows." Of course your expecting some good, musically sophisticated, pleasing to the ear, straight to the point rock music and here it is.
The opening track, "slow lullaby," is an eery introduction to the album. Personally I would say that it is not strictly a song in itself, more just to set the scene. Its chilling lyrics and piano are followed by "medication," the opening bars pure guitar, it just feels like rock. The song itself is not a particular hit, neither is the following one, but they are both palitable.
Next comes the first track of particular merit, 'tangled up in Plaid.' It is musically pleasing and emotional.
Track 5, 'Burn the witch', is my favourite song of the album and is the sort of song that sticks in your head for a number of days. It is simple but affective, speaking...
