Those of you who know quite a bit about the Underground Black Metal scene will know that Darkthrone are in fact one of the genre’s finer parts, or maybe that should be grimmer parts. After giving it a bit of thought (and being given a bit of advice by “Rude”) I decided to get “A Blaze in the Northern Sky”.

The opening song “Kathaarian Life Code” is a spooky and brutal song. It starts with some chants from Fenriz (drummer, lyrics), and some strange grunts from vocalist Nocturno Culto. Just after reaching the minute mark, the song completely changes. Enter crushing riffs, mad drumming and a vocalist who has a gut wrenchingly evil scream!

There are many, many pace changes throughout this album. One minute Fenriz is giving the drums a light tap, the next minute he is pounding the hell out of them! Both Zephyrous (rhythm guitar), and Nocturno Culto (lead guitar, vocals) churn out many fast, slow and heavy riffs for the duration of the album.

If you are reading this after my opinion on Emperor’s “Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk”, I shall warn you that Darkthrone and Emperor have two very different styles of Black Metal. “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” is a very dark and sinister album. It comprises of much heavy and brutal guitar work, combined with inventive and interesting drumming. Nocturno Culto’s vocals are a very powerful asset to Darkthrone, as they constantly fit the mood of all the songs perfectly.

I would seriously recommend “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” to anyone who is interested in getting into the Underground Black Metal scene. I will warn you though, it is a very grim, brutal, evil and sinister album. A complete masterpiece, and in Darkthrone’s own words:

“True Norwegian Black Metal”.
