Blizzard of Ozz was Ozzy Osbourne's (former singer from Black Sabbath) first solo album, This album features as well as Ozzy the now legendary guitar of the late Randy Rhoads. This album was recorded in 1980 (two years prior to Randys death) and is one of only two albums featuring Randy as ozzy's guitarist, The singles from this album were Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley, of which Crazy Train reached no.9.
Randy
This albums guitarist Randy Rhoads, helped Ozzy gain popularity and launch his solo career, Randys guitar work is instantly recogniseable by the beautiful melodys, brilliant riff writing and clever solo's based on rock and roll favourite!! the pentatonic scale!!, Randy uses alot of pedal tones in his playing, and plays both Lead and Rhythm guitar with extreme skill, he never seems to stop playing!
Randys brilliant blend of rock and melodious playing was down to his love of classical music aswell as modern music and often fused elements of classical songs into his work
Songs
1. I Dont Know-5.16- This song features a very strong memorable riff wrote around the key of A like much of Randys work, featuring strong but slightly disonant forth chords with pedal note's between (for you non musicians! ITS GOOD!!)
2. Crazy Train- 4.55- This is Ozzys most instantly recognisable song, and for good reason, possible the best riff of all time!, if you like 80's rock and roll/metal and you havent heard this song! i would be very surprised, another song based around A pedal tones, this song shows extreme skill aswell as instantly recognisable riffs, the lyrics arent bad either.
3. Goodbye to Romance- 5:36- This is a beautiful song that shows even heavy metal has a bright side, beautifully writen slow paced song with inspiring guitar, beautiful solo and rather relaxed singing!, a change for Ozzy but this is one of my favourite songs on the album, you can really recognise Randy's classical influence in this song. Even metal bands can turn off the distortion!! (just not for very long periods!)
4. Dee-0.49- This is a classical style song writen by Randy, Its not what you would expect to see on the album to be honest, but it is a mightly melodious song which immortalised Randy as not only a good rock star but a brilliant musician/composer.
5. Suicide Solution- 4:19 this song has good guitar work as expected, but received controversy from its lyrics being drug and alcohol abuse themed. Getting past the negative conitations of this song, its pretty good, certainly not one of the best on the album though.
6. Mr. Crowley- 4:56- I love the intro to this, and a pretty decent vocal performance from Ozzy, Great guitar work, and a very skillful solo, which really shows how groundbreaking Randy was at his time.
7. No Bone Movies- 3.57- Quite an up tempo song, written in rock and roll style with a difference, very catchy guitar a fun one too learn, quite humourous lyrics, although probably offensive too many. Otherwise a great song.
8 Revelation (mother earth)-6:09- A simply beautiful song, great clean guitarwork and even good lyrics, another good clean song similar kind of style to "goodbye to romance", This song shows why Ozzy will never be as successful as he was back with Randy. This song also features a piano interlude and solo very skillfully played, Definately worth learning for you pianists out there!
9. Steal Away-3:31- Another great song, finishing the album in true rock and roll style, great riffs, a very prominant baseline, one of my personal favourites. another great solo, topped off with plenty of delay.
