Personally I like it a lot, largely experimental it crosses plenty of genres, I'd like to describe it as hatebreed beating macabre up in a hippy community as it fuses metalcore and sludge metal with more psychedelic tunes and even a bit of stoner rock. It even gets jazzy at times, in fact it's so eclectic that you could listen to the same track over and over again and spot different things each time. It starts off with an overpowering catchy "The Wolf Is Loose" and then tries various music styles before going all out weird and let's have fun with a guitar on "Bladecatcher" before finishing off with some quieter tracks. The album is a bit of a journey and something definitely worth listening to.

Advantages: Progressive metal at its BEST Disadvantages: the album doesnt go on forever
Are you a metaller who sits around watching the music television chanels and thinks "theres gotta be some music better than all this" well my fellow there is. If you have yet to discover Mastodon i highly suggest this album. The great thing about mastodon and this album is that mastodon dont sound like anyone. Yes they are as heavy as 100 wooly mammoths but they have a technical complexity in their music that is rare to find at the moment. Such complex ... ...as Frank Zappa and Sikth. This album unlike the previous 2 is alot more guitar orientated with a good selection of face melting lead solos which are awsome but in reality the best thing about mastodon are the riffs. A mastodon riff is alot more than some regular run of the mill riff. its brutal andmelodic at the same time while still holding onto its technicality. The bass playing is just as good as the guitar playin and considering the bassist is ...

Advantages: value for money, nice cover art, good guitar Disadvantages: none that i can think of
Mastodon are an excellent band, and it really shows on this CD. When I bought it I had no idea who they even were, but somehow I ended up going back to the store to see if they had any other CDs out, which is something I don't often do. From start to finish the songs are consistantly excellent, and they play some of the best guitar I have ever heard from any band on the planet. The songs don't sound as if they were written at the last minute by somebody ... ...Compared with their other releases, I wouldn't say it was better than the stuff they've done before but it definitely carries on the high standard of Mastodon's music. With some bands the standard drops over time, but Mastodon carry on churning out brilliant lyrics and music.
The cover art for the CD is drawn in an interesting style and it's eye catching without being too colourful. It fits well with the music and what you see is really what you ...

Album Notes
Mastodon: Brent Hinds (vocals, guitar); Troy Sanders (vocals, bass guitar); Bill Kelliher (guitar); Brann Dailor (drums). Additional personnel: Joshua Homme, Scott Kelly, Cedric Bixler Zavala. Reigning kings of the early-2000s metal resurgence, Atlanta's Mastodon expertly blended vintage speed-metal riffage, stoner rock's sludgy power, and prog's vision and scope on 2004's acclaimed LEVIATHAN. The band returns even stronger on their 2006 major label debut, BLOOD MOUNTAIN. The quartet's playing remains unquestionably tight, as fierce solos overlay colossal riffs, which are anchored by a rhythm section that is fluid when necessary (as on the ambient prog-metal of "Sleeping Giant") and lock-step perfect when the orders for speed and power are sent down from on high (see "Bladecatcher"). While BLOOD MOUNTAIN is purportedly a concept album (loosely built around the idea of being lost and doomed and at nature's mercy in the great wild, as opposed to LEVIATHAN's overt Moby Dick theme) it's difficult to decipher a clear narrative from the scorched-earth vocals. Nonetheless, a classical sense of grandiosity pervades the album, as the lightning intensity and sheer power of the music take the listener on a bewildering journey. But remain calm, dear listener: Mastodon will get you to the top of the mountain--bloody and beaten, but altogether satisfied.
