When this album was released in 1997, I was at a loss as to why it was made, as it is essentially an album full of past songs (mainly from the HIStory album) remixed by various people, althouh there are some brand new songs on there which had not been released prior to appearing on this album. Maybe Michael Jackson wanted to make his mark on the modern day dance music scene in the same way that he did with 70's and 80's disco. I will put my initial reservations to one side, and shoot from the hip, telling you in my honest opinion whether this change in image and direction worked.
The opening track is also the title track, and to be frank it does not bode well. Here Jackson sings about a woman he meets then she betrays him. His experience of this kind of experience is surely limited and the conviction is just not there. If you can bring yourself to listen to the lyrics, it is obvious that he is trying to show his dark side, but try as I might I just cannot take him seriously. He is not hard, he is not tough, he has become a figure that people poke fun at whilst he in encased in his own world,
and no track demonstrates this more than 'Morphine', which is a song about drug addiction, and many think that this is Michael getting back at the people who he claimed got him addicted to painkillers.
'Superfly Sister' is the kind of song I am sure die hard fans will love, but his voice sounds uptight (more than normal), and I dread to think what he is thinking about when he sings about 'pushing it in'. Nasty picture in my mind I can tell you! 'Ghosts' is just everything I hate about Michael Jackson. The repetitive beat, the exaggerated 'whoos' and 'ahs' highly pitched backing singers and the stilted breathy vocals coming from the man himself. Is It Scary' is much the same, and they both just sound like second rate versions of the classic songs we all know he is capable of. When he actually does sing instead of just making noises, hints of his genius appear, but then are gone before they have the chance to materialise into anything worthy of your time.
'Scream Louder (Slyte Tyme Remix)' is the remixed version of the duet he did with sister Janet. Now I really liked the original, and all they have done here is add a really strange guitar riff which just does not seem to fit, and this seems to be the case with many of the remixes on this album. They have not added anything positive to the songs, they have just added things for the sake of it, and to me this just shows how much contempt he has not only for the media, but for his fans who loyally part with their hard earned cash for this dross.
The CD is now becoming a rather lacklustre affair. 'Money (Fire Island Radio Edit)' shows signs of promise, but because the track has been remixed, it just does not deliver on the promise. I can see him in my mind's eye dancing around robotically whilst listening to this, it is totally comical. No remix album would be complete without a touch of Wyclef Jean, and the next track has that touch '2 Bad (Refugee Camp Mix)'. It is quite a funky remix with a good strong beat but still mellow enough to be played in more low key situations. It is apparent immediately that this move has been a very deliberate one to try and recapture the imagination of his old fans who had fallen by the wayside, and also try to pick up some new ones along the way, but it was nothing that a boat load of artists weren't already doing, only it seems Michael has flipped as he talks about the mother of his child as a woman who is now trying to kill him. He has now completely missed the point and lost the plot.
'Stanger In Moscow (Tee's In-House Club Mix) is probably the only remix which works on this CD as the vocals are not drowned out by the thump of the dance beat, and so much of the original song is left untouched with the dance beat placed over the top of it, even if it is relentless in it's quest to give you a whopper of a headache, because if the music does not succeed, his overly made up face on the cover certainly will! 'This Time Around' just passes you by without incident and it is instantly forgettable.
The controversial 'Earth Song' is remixed by the unknown Hani. It is a complete tragedy when a decent song like this is ripped to pieces as it will never sound the same again, and my enthusiasm for the music of Michael Jackson will probably never be the same since I first listened to this diabolical collection of mis matched music. There is a glimmer of light with his ode to ex wife Lisa Marie Presley on the song 'You Are Not Alone', but it is the strength of the ballad that shines through rather than the production being slick enough to make it sound great.
The final track is a low key remix of HIStory, and the album limps to a close whilst the listener reflects on a CD which never really lived up to expectations and just botched it's way from song to song leaving disaster in it's wake. I would not recommend this to even the most dedicated fan as it is nothing that you cannot get and to a much higher standard on the double CD HIStory.

Good review. I think the release of this had more to do with Sony than anything else!

Thank you for the honesty of you op, I was relieved to find that I was not alone in thinking this was rather overkill. Bit like when Enya released her original BBC album, unaltered, under new label!
