In an interesting twist, something that is rarely done by any artist, let alone one who can be as original as Michael Jackson, this album, Blood On The Dance Floor, consists mainly of remixed and covered versions of some of his previous tracks. The first 5 feature newer songs, ones we haven't seen before, but from there on in, we get to hear remade versions of other MJ songs, some hits, some not.
First up: of the original songs, there is some impressive stuff, with the best, lyrically and emotionally, being Superfly Sister, which is written about his sister LaToya Jackson, and her abusive relationship. It's a tuneful track that brings out MJ's true passion in his music: the melodies. Throughout his albums, the melodies are the one thing, for me, that stand out. There is something soothing and a step above a lot of his other work when it comes to the melodic side, and here, he pieces together the different sounds to make a very emotional track.
Ghosts is also an impressive new one. It's a bit faster, and has something very clever about it lyrically. A very catchy track indeed. The title track, Blood on the Dance Floor, again very melodic and reminiscent of some of his earlier work. You can't help look at a lot of the lyrics here and marvel at the way he operates. A lot of people say he is extremely reclusive, but if you look at the lyrics of his work, then he is far more open about things, and this is reinforced with the rest of the album, the remixes.
When I bought 'History' in the mid-90s, I was impressed by some of the tracks on the second disc, although I found them harder to listen to, even if it was merely because they weren't as familiar to me as some of the more established and released tracks. It's interesting listening to them on this album, as they are essentially the same, just presented differently. For those of you who are familiar with these tracks from 'History', the thing I noticed more was the power of the lyrics, and how much you notice them more.
This is perhaps not the case with Scream, the duet with his sister Janet. It's an aggressive track, well remixed, but nothing special for me. The haunting and relaxing ballad Stranger in Moscow gets a bit of a club treatment, showing its versatility, as does Earth Song. Both of these songs were originally very vocally leading, with the lyrics doing all of the talking, particularly with Earth Song, in terms of the message being sent out. The club remixes here make it more about the beat and the familiarity of the song. In this respect, they appeal to a wider audience, but perhaps lose their messages somewhat.
Overall, I found this to be an interesting album. Normally, I would have looked with a certain amount of cynicism at an album that mainly features remixes of previous songs - it seems almost lazy, and a money-grabbing concept. But this is almost like having a complete album of new tracks, and I was impressed.
Sure, it's nowhere near his best in terms of the overall musical presentation, but lyrically it is excellent. It's interesting to hear some of the musical variations of recognisable tracks, mixed well with some newer tracks. Blood On The Dance Floor is available for £12.19 from amazon.co.uk, but no doubt you'd be able to find it a lot cheaper if you have a search. I'd recommend listening to this, particularly the remixes.
