... The other reason is that, while I still find myself loving it, “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” is a different story entirely to the later albums. Different style, different mood, almost as if the band were different people altogether way back when this was produced. And hey, aren’t we all, 10 years ... Read review

Raunchy and explicit from the first, the lyrical content was not for the easily offended and frequently strayed into misogyny. Musically, it straddled metal and funk with ease; in addition to the stomping, infectious rockers (Give It Away, The Power Of Equality) and the downright funky (Mellowship Slinky, Apache Rose Peacock), all underpinned by Flea's virtuosic but unselfish basslines, the band also showed themselves capable of writing surprisingly melodic ballads (Breaking The Girl, Under The Bridge).[Reviews]Rolling Stone (5/13/99, p.50) - Included in Rolling Stone's Essential Recordings of the 90's.Spin (9/99, p.150) - Ranked #58 in Spin Magazine's 90 Greatest Albums of the '90s. of punk, funk, and hip-hop. Even with a running time of 74 minutes, this 1991 breakthrough has continuity and cohesion both within and across the 17 cuts. Riding Flea's surging bass, Anthony Kiedis delivers his explicit lyrics with a rapper's flair, extolling the virtues (and outlining the dangers) of sex and drugs. Plaintive ballads such as "Breaking the Girl", "I Could Have Lied", and the hit "Under the Bridge" give the album depth and provide contrast to the raw energy of "Mellowship Slinky in B Major", "Funky Monks", and "Give It Away". Rubin masterfully fuses John Frusciante's raunchy guitar with the irresistible grooves. --Marc Greilsamer

~~~~~ BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK GENIUS ~~~~~
I feel weird about writing this review and am not quite sure yet where it’s gonna take me or whether I’m going to like it as much as my other Chilis reviews. I’m writing from a completely different (interpret: biased) perspective than when I set out to write my “By The Way” review – in a matter of months I have become a firm fan and cannot get enough of this band’s music. Starting out on this I am more than ... ...~ Give It Away ~ Blood Sugar Sex Magik ~ Under the Bridge ~ Naked In The Rain ~ Apache Rose Peacock ~ The Greeting Song ~ My Lovely Man ~ Sir Psycho Sexy ~ They’re Red Hot. ~~~~~ EXTREME & EXTRAORDINARY ~~~~~
At the time this came out, I was 16 and while I remember my Mum telling me not to watch the video for “Give It Away” on TV and listening to “Under the Bridge” thinking the chorus was particularly cool, I cannot remember there being any other ...
Advantages: Really fun record, more funky than a spunky monkey. Disadvantages: None, except the sometimes "offensive" language may upset a small minority.
...recordings, I must say that Blood Sugar Sex Magik is my all time favourite! It has soul, it has energy, it has John Frusciante! This CD makes me want to jump on my sofa and bounce all over the place. At this point (1991), the Chili Peppers line-up looked like this: - Anthony Kiedis as lead vocalist, John Frusciante on Lead Guitar, Michael “Flea” Balzary on Bass and Chad Smith on drums. Anthony's unmistakable voice lends so much power ... ...say hell yes” BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK The song the album is named after. It was an interesting song to pick because this is not a particularly well known Chili’s song, at least compared to others on this album Though it does have a cool title so I can see why it was chosen! Catchy song with a slightly “dark” tone to it. Enjoyable. UNDER THE BRIDGE Written by Anthony and based on his experiences as a Heroin addict, this is a ...
Advantages: Funk, damn loads of funk! Disadvantages: Not enough songs still played live
Blood Sugar Sex Magik is an album fired by one thing: funk. This is, without a doubt, the funkiest album to Chili’s name and also the band’s best record to date. The music is inspirational, uplifting and so different to the usual rock formula. Upon listening to this album, it is impossible not to get lost in the beat. Blood Sugar Sex Magik sports the band’s classic (and current) line up: Anthony Keidis on lead vocals, John Frusciante ... ...verse of the title track, Blood Sugar Sex Magik: Frusciante plays a continuous “A” note which on its own sounds very boring (I know this from practice!!) but combined with some of Flea’s talent, the song is turned into a deliciously funky experience. He’s one of the best bass players that I’ve ever come across, a truly influential player of the instrument.
John Frusciante is simply a superb guitarist. Throughout the ...
I don't really know why they chose this as the album title. It's definitely not their best. I'm not saying I don't like it, I like it very much, but all other tracks are much better. Perhaps they chose this because it has such a damn cool name, and because they were able to make that witty play on words (See title of op) on the cover? The song starts with very very slow guitar plucks that sounds like ... ...in, very slowly but surely. Like: Dum ... dum dum ... dum dum dum! Then the bass starts exactly at the same pace, until Anthony (in a very deep voice) starts singing the obviously dirty lyrics; "Blood sugar sucker fish, in my dish. How many pieces do you wish?". It's pretty much the same throughout with Anthony finally letting go towars the end and rapping like normal.
