The Red Hot Chili Peppers have recorded numerous albums but Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic has to be one of the best yet. It's more rap than Californication but also has some brilliantly sung and played mellow songs such as "I could have lied". It has more swearing than Californication but isn't so boppy. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a mixture of pop, rock, rap, punk and alternitive so all the different types of songs are on the album. But the main song and probably the best is Under The Bridge which is about his heroine addiction, though All Saints stole it (without permission) and sung about how they love a city, and it's really shallow, yet the Red Hot Chili Peppers version was deep and didn't actually mean that they loved the city! I would say that this album and Californication are equal in thier own ways. It's a good album if you like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, yet if you don't then... well... you won't.

Interesting to hear that awful cover was not quite done the proper way although it does not surprise me. I think your last statement was a bit sweeping, although I came to love the Chilis in a different way myself more recently, I knew some people in college who came to know their music through Blood Sugar Sex Magik and were absolutely blown away by it. In fact I don't really know why I didn't pay more attention back then! I would recommend this album to anyone who likes rock, funk, hip-hop, rap or just different and original music, as well as Chilis fans.

Advantages: totally fresh, totally unmatched, totally original, "Under the Bridge" and "Give It Away" Disadvantages: extremely parental advisory - not for those offended by bad language or innuendo
Advantages: Really fun record, more funky than a spunky monkey. Disadvantages: None, except the sometimes "offensive" language may upset a small minority.
