Blowback is quite bass-heavy as you would expect but that's definitely not a bad thing. I was initially hooked by the Wonder-Woman-theme-sampling insanity of #1 Da Woman (did you see what he did there?) but soon realised that the rest of the CD is even better than that admittedly kitsch offering. "Song For Yukiko" is a classic. The Japanese touches and haunting piano are different from anything else on the ... .../>
Blowback boasts collaborations with Anthony Keidis, Flea, Alanis Morrisette and squeaky-voiced fraggle, Cyndi Lauper, and, contrary to expectation, they work brilliantly with Tricky's dulcet tones to produce everything from the ambient to the raucous to seventies disco.

...does it again. I have loved Tricky's voice since Karmacoma. The boy just sounds like the most chilled man on the planet. Advantages: Definitely fitting with the movie, great tracklisting with sexy brooding songs Disadvantages: My version has the swear words edited out... grr
too generic for my liking, and the same has to be said for his compadres' musical skills. And on an album where it's almost the same 'quiet / loud / distortons / angry bits' in each track, that's not a flattering deduction. Still, it's alright to listen to.

looking up into a neon sky
The child in me takes over
Guess it's been too long
since the last time that I tried to fly"
13. EXCESS ; Tricky - 'BlowBack' album (4:43)
Another atmospheric start as one by one different instruments / layers of this memorable track come in to build up 'trip-hop' artist Tricky's laidback and catchy collaboration with Stephanie McKay and Alanis Morissette. Tricky's spoken words and slightly gruff voice supply the observational verses, and McKay and Morrissette serve the beautifully melodic choruses ...
Advantages: Cool CD cover, Hours of effortless Depression, Tricky's Voice Disadvantages: Can Reverse Effects of Prozac, Takes a Couple of Listens to Really Get Into, Can't Use the CD as Legal Tender in Korea
energetic sounds to go with it. Definitely a good one for when you're in a bad mood.
My Evil Is Strong is one of those full-of-random-sounds-but-still-sounds-amazing deals. It feels like a smiling demon describing his exploits (don't ask how I know what that's like). Nice track for when you want to kick your neighbour's kids out of a 4th floor window.
Piano sees Tricky break out the (shock horror) piano sounds on his synthesiser. With two minor chords plinking away in the background, and Tricky's gravelly voice pootling along on top at twice the pace, the contrast feels like the kind of thing Satan might perform when depressed. If he got depressed. If he's a he. Oh, never mind.
All in all, in my opinion, Tricky's best album. After PMT, his albums became more and more commercial (BlowBack - his latest - features Cyndi Lauper and - gag ...

Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (7/5/01, p.138) - 3.5 out of 5 stars - "...His outlook and tone are sunnier than ever....Credit goes to its focused, melodic songs and stylistic range - the album veers from dreamily childlike to furiously metallic, from bouncy dance-hall reggae to funked-up TV-theme fun..." Q (8/01, p.141) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...It should remind long-disillusioned fans what they liked about tricky in the first place....still strange and uncategorisable..." Mixmag (7/01, p.204) - 3 out of 5 - "...Sticking to his signature techniques, pairing his gravelly voice with coy female vocals...designing music from random sounds. The slow burning malevolence of vintage Tricky is present..." Vibe (8/01, p.165) - 4 discs out of 5 - "...Tricky's triumphant return..." Entertainment Weekly (7/13/01, p.86) - "...Shockingly user-friendly..." - Rating: B+ JazzTimes (12/01, p.124) - "...Undeniably sensual..." Mojo (7/01, p.112) - "...The album he should've made right after MAXINQUAYE - i.e., a listenable one..." NME (6/30/01, p.43) - 6 out of 10 - "...It's Tricky uncovered; emotionally unplugged, with raw honesty and the naked sensual Truth fizzing from its multifarious grooves like exposed wires..." CMJ (6/4/01, p.12) - "...Marked by warm and more welcoming material draped around a series of vocal contributions, recalling the construct of his 1996 NEARLY GOD release..."

On the limmited edition it has all the music videos on it as well! An excellent touch I think!
The cover is the only downside that I have found, it looks nice now but after time it's going to be a bit scruffy as it's made like a hard back book with no plastic covering. (*)
