Written and illustrated by Raymond Briggs, When the WindBlows was his first attempt at an adult graphic novel. Released in 1982 on the back of his success with children?s books, it tells a sorrowful tale of the effect a nuclear attack on England has on a retired couple living in rural Sussex. A heavy topic, but the dark, yet compassionate sense of humour pervading the book lightens the mood somewhat. Twinned with the cosy, pastel shaded art-work, the unsettling, yet warm-hearted story closely examines the initial effects of a disaster on two people who have never done anything to deserve it.

Advantages: Must-read, amazing plot and binding characters Disadvantages: none...
I read this book last summer, and wasn't really expecting much honestly, as the author was one I did not know of. But as soon as the first narrative, the first page, it was no question how easy it was for me to get hooked.
This book follows the story of a girl named Max and a group of other "bird children" who've resulted from multitudes of expirements which crosses human beings with birds. Thus, we find our heroine and her troop with the wondrous capabilities of flight and an intelligence with which they use to escape their so-called "lab life" as the "project" was doomed to be destroyed and the children alongside it.
With a beautifully-woven plot, this story's unexpected charms will leave you breathless. And like the characters, light in the wings of flight.. ...
